Trying to get the heaviest thrash tone I can!!5153 el34 100w

Post by EndTime »

I’ve had this song close to being finished for awhile. But I know I truly never dived in and questioned every section, every beat that I got “lazy” with. As a lot of times when I’m writing, I’m writing the beats with it, but they don’t get as much initial scrutiny as the riffs of course. And then when all is said and done I go back and fine tune everything. I really hadn’t done that for this song since it was pretty close straight away. But it was also laziness. Anyway, I fine tuned the beats and the structure.

I also decided instead of sorta getting more of style’izd (lol) thrash tone. Meaning a bit more bite and chunk and less gain on some occasions, I said tuck all that, let’s just do my tone I use for death metal, for example. Which is more gain!!! More thicker and just a little rounder without losing much tightness. So this is the 5153 el34 on the red channel, with gain on like 8. Which the great thing about these amps is the clarity is there almost the entire sweep. It just thickens up with more gain applied. And even then it never gets too out of control..

Also brought out the Beta57 which I used to use almost exclusively in years past. I NEVER used the regular 57. And it’s been sitting for awhile. So I paired the beta 57 with the Sennheiser 421. Definitely feel this is a good representation of the tone!

yeah there's definitely a lot of clarity for the amount of gain involved, since 8 on the red channel is truly a metric ton of gain hahaha... but it sounds good and it's definitely a good fit for the song!

Thanks man! And honestly it’s one of those channels that it really doesn’t get more distorted the higher it gets, it just fills out a bit. It’s pretty much max gain at like noon. Anything above just fills out some of the spectrum. And to some degree I find it a bit easier to dial in the eq with the gain higher . On the red channel that is. Blue channel is a bit more balanced overall so it’s not as picky when it comes to eq settings

Big thanks man!! And yeah it’s fresh, but I love the tone too! It’s honestly what I was shooting for when I set out to do this. And that isn’t always a guarentee! Hah. And since my ears were kid a fried after recording I wasn’t into the initial mix but when I came back the next day I knew it sounded huge, and actually the main mic here is the 421. Prolly 10db louder than the beta 57. But as soon as I put that beta 57 in the mix it really does add that grit and snarl. But the overall tone just has this growl in the low end which this amp 100% has in spades I just haven’t always captured it like this time

You left some tone on the table! I ran it at 7 fairly often anyway. . Again, it’s just the shape of the tone when the settings get higher.. It’s not more gain. It takes on a bit more of a PV gain structure the higher it goes. Thicker lower mids and the compression. . For the most part it’s usable til almost 10. Not quite as it starts being too much when maxed but it should be designed to be basically usable most of the sweep and then only on “10” is it too much.. From a design standpoint that’s what makes most sense to me and I think that was likely their intent.

But also I saw EVh himself used to run the red channel gain pretty high and I even saw the Gojira dude use the el34 and his gain was on 8. It’s good to experiment and know every tone in the amp.

Yeah, I mean I definitely played with the gain that high, but like you said, it changes the response, and I didn't like what that change was, so I never would've been like...oh I like this lemme record it.

Thanks dude! Found sumthin in there I think I could repeat if needed! Cause the red channel can be a little finicky to record, some days I’m like, what sounds like this? Other days I can hear sumthin inherently I don’t like. Blue channel, has it all tho. If I just had a one channel amp, it’d be the blue of the el34 100 watt. Just cause it can get literally as heavy and distorted as the red and do more 80s style thrash plugged straight in. And even clean up with the volume on the guitar

I did one more clip with EMGs. And a single mic.. I dug up this EV n/d468 mic. I also used to use this quite often and it has a smoother midrange than other similar mics which I really liked.. I went thru 4 guitars or so and picked the one I thought sounded best. Ad it turned out to be the EMG 81 at 18votls

Hey man! Long time no see but thanks a bunch!!!

And because it’s prolly run it’s course I dug up the lewitt 440 mic I think it was. I remember initially thinking it went great with a 57 but not so much in its own. And it sounded great. So I had to do a version with just the Lewitt. I’ve been sitting with these all for a few days and I think this is actually my favorite!

Thanks man! Honestly I wish to not always be “on 11” it’s just kinda what happens. But I’m actively trying to restrain some of that. And I write a LOT without this speed and aggression. My problem is I’m trying to shoehorn it into a more metal setting cause that’s the type of collaborators I have and really that other stuff needs sumthin else.

Anyway….. lol. Thanks again

Thanks too! The vocalist for this thru that name on it. Pretty sure it’s just a working title but who knows, maybe it’ll be the final one!

I didn’t really like it much at first except with a 57 and figured we’ll it’s at least good for that but this was it by itself. It has a bit more relaxed midrange than a 57 and WAY more low end. But it’s pretty clean the low end. I had to chop a bunch out but it’s still got good low end energy. Gonna keep playing around with it.
