OD Pedal for a Plexi

Post by maggotspawn »

Looking for an OD for my 50 watt Plexi clone. Currently using a Klon clone. Looking for hard rock and metal tones.

For a boost?? SD-1, TS-9 and Klone are the main options ands I think every Marshall Player should own all 3 of them. A good 4th option is the Fulltone OCD. And the BB Preamp is a good choice too.

If you are planning to run the amp clean and use a pedal for your gain tones, I highly recommend the Carl Martin Plexitone. Or the Caline Englishman, which sounds identical. But I'd still get the Carl Martin just for the extra peace of mind with the build quality. And it's good to support the original designer, especially since the pedal is not outrageously expensive.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

Thanks Billy. I have all of those except for the BB Preamp. Some experimenting to do.

My best metal tones with Plexi and 800's involve triple boosting using an OCD 1.3 or the clone of it Billy talks about into a tubescreamer into a Boss EQ set to unity gain but with some flavor of 800hz and 1600hz boosted up. Don't be afraid to dial back the amp gain to just a bit over AC/DC levels with this setup.

A Klone used as a clean boost would be my first choice. Plexis' don't need to much to achieve full on violent glory. If you need a bit more, bump the pedal gain up a bit.

That would be the simplist solution.

I assume you'll have the amp set loud and hairy.

I just got a Wampler Pinnacle and it takes my Plexi clone from a mild pushed sound on its own to full on brown sound.... I was not expecting it to be as good as it is

So many options for you... Have you looked into the OCD? I think that would work great for you.

SD-1. Always my first choice.

I like the Kingtone Duellist so much I bought a second one for my new pedalboard. It has by far my favorite TS style pedal and I’ve tried just about all of them at this point. But what really surprised me was the Bluesbreaker side. I pretty much only use that side now unless I’m on a Strat neck pickup. Kingtone makes standalone versions now too. Highly recommend.

I’d go with a Digitech Metal Master.
Analogman / Bludotone / Bogner / Fargen / Fender / G&L / JAM Pedals / King Tone / RMC / Skervesen / Strymon / Vertex
