Five covers you'd like to play out

Post by Reverse Entropy »

Simple premise. Everyone has songs they'd like to cover, but don't get a chance to. I want to know what yours are - pick five.

I'd prefer it if they are songs that you rarely even hear, but you think are great. Even better if it's a strange re-boot like Static Lullaby's cover of 'Toxic.'

But in the interest of openness and getting as much response as possible, there really isn't anything off-limits.
“Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."(Hanlon's Razor)

"rock enough that I don't drown in ... jazz ennui" - draelyc

"...you realize that absolutely nothing happens when you get butthurt, right?
You know you're not going to go home and immediately have cancer, right?" - Steinmetzify

Ok I have a weird mix, nothing too out there though

In any band I was ever in as a bass player or a guitarist (which were mostly rock/metal gigs) these are the ones I wished I got to cover:

Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign
Lemon Song ( Zep, - I really wanted to play this one during my bass days)
Room 1000 Years Wide (Soundgarden)
Left to Die (Death)
Dog Faced Gods (Testament)

I probably have a 100 others but for some reason these stick out in my head.

nights in white satin - the moody blues
quarantined - ATDI
like spinning plates - Radiohead
death letter blues - Son House
Austrialia - the Shins

and hundreds more. i really love doing covers. covers for me though, not covers for sports bar cougars. though they pay more.

That Butthole Surfers song is sick. Hell yeah.

I think I've pretty much been through (probably incorrectly) every iconic punk-type song I'm able to wrap my guitar around.

hmmmm maybe Moonage Daydream by Bowie so I'd have an excuse to dust off the wah (if I can find it).
Funkadelic? let's say Super Stoopid.
I'd love to do a Rhoads-era Ozzy song but I suck too much to play the leads correctly.
Another Maiden tune besides Flight of Icarus....Runnin' Free
And one I know I can do, but never played it out- Pineola by Lucinda Williams. Noisy bottleneck with too much gain FTW :D

Thin Lizzy - Don't Believe A Word.
Def Leppard - Switch 625, tacked onto a song that ends on the right note.
Blue Öyster Cult - Tattoo Vampire with strobe lights in time with the intro. Corny but fun.
Weird Al Yankovic - You Don't Love Me Anymore.
set closer = David Gilmour - Near The End. Leave 'em on a happy note! :D

Too bad it's Margaritaville and Brown-Eyed Girl territory here.

I've been fortunate enough to do most of the songs I'd like to, but here are a few that will probably never happen.....

Deep Purple: Demon's Eye
Yngwie Malmsteen: I'll See The Light Tonight
The Rolling Stones: Angie, Heartbreaker, Hot Stuff
Coroner: Die By My Hand

Nothing really. Not particularly interesting in playing covers. For one, I'd actually have to learn shit. :idk:

I suppose I could have... just not posted in this thread. :o

Back in the 3rd World where I grew up, I was in various cover bands, and one of them we did both Alice in Chains and Marilyn Manson songs. My job for covers is done.

As far as the topic goes, I'm working on a version of Madonna's Burning Up. My original version of that would be something akin to what Manson would do, but I'm rethinking it now to be more closer to The Cult.

These may seem silly because they are easy to find folks willing to do it.

The first two are Everlong by Foo Fighters and Plus by Stone Temple Pilots. I love singing and playing both and used to practice them a ton with the bands I played with in HS. We just never played covers out and generally picked up songs we thought were fun that we all knew how to play to practice playing tight together and break things up. Both of those songs are so much fun that I'd like to have played them in front of a crowd.

The third is The Cowboy Song by Thin Lizzy. Ever since Olaf Krampfe (spelling?) on the HC boards posted his Diezel V4 clips playing this song way back in like 2003, I've had a thing for it. Another one I think would just be a ton of fun to play real tight with friends.

The fourth is also silly. It's Anthology by Thrice. I have no idea what it is about this song, but playing and singing it just gives me a huge rush and makes me feel uplifted. It's a personal thing. It has nothing to do with lyrics or a time in my life. It's just since the first time I've heard it I can't help but to get my heartbeat elevated listening to it and feeling happy. Add the energy of the crowd and I'd just be through the roof.
