i can play drums?

Post by wrongnote85 »

so i've been learning myself to beat the skins for the past little bit now, and i finally worked up the 'chops' to film myself in an attempt to get critiques from my drummer buddies. (brolando, that means miller)

so here's a few that i did last night. it should also be noted that this is the first time i've EVER done any kind of video editing whatnot, so the quality ain't that happenin' and sometimes the music is out of sink. not to mention i'm not playing the parts exactly, like i would on guitar. and i hit a clinker or two every now and again.

anywho:

Man on the Silver Mountain--Rainbow

Lady Evil--Black Sabbath

Hot Line--Black Sabbath

i've got a few others, but i've either not done the 'editing' bit yet, or it's so fuct up that i may have to start over. thanks for checking it out!

I'm a drummer as well.. and i only watched a minute of the first 2vids.. The dio Cover seemed pretty good.. For Lady Evil it sounds like Bill is playing quarters on the hi-hat, where you are playing 1/8ths. I know you weren't trying to be exact, but its easy to get sucked in to playing 1/8ths all the time on the hats/ride to help keep time.. But i think its best to learn early about keeping the ride hand slower when possible.. i think it really helps tighten up the timing when you can hang back and still keep the beat solid and steady.. Plus i find it leads to more interesting fills

Very good advice. The key to it all is your Hi-Hat hand. It keeps the time and sets the mood.

I once put my guitar away for about a year and played nothing but drums. My progress stalled and I couldn't get out of my rut, then gave up and sold the kit.

You're doing way better than I ever did. It brings back some memories when I see you stumble then you get back into the groove and forge on. I would fumble on the same types of parts you did but the difference was I couldn't get back on track.

Keep it up!

that's some pretty solid advice up there man, thanks.

i have a real problem with limb independence, bad. my right side all wants to do the same thing at the same time. i can do simple kick patterns, but if i try to do anything tricky it seems that i can't help but play that same thing on the hi hat or ride. playing 8ths seems to be about the only way that i can do anything with the kick beyond boom boom boom buboom.

whats the trick?

Im sure there is a trick, but i sure dont know it.. lol..

For me, it just started to come to me after years of playing.. My drumming evolved quite differently than my guitar playing.. in that, i never play drums by myself and "practice". I started playing in a band and pretty much only play drums with a band. which was only supposed to be until we found a "real" drummer and I'd go to guitar. That was in 2001.. lol

So my point is, i never really worked on things like i did while learning guitar and practice by myself.. My trick ended up being time and having bandmates tell me to try a beat and i eventually just started getting certain drumming techniques down..

But if i did practice, one of the things i would have worked on earlier was the slower ride/hat.. Even when playing faster music it can beneficial. Maybe its just relaxing the body by playing a bit more open that is its true benefit.

With that said, I'll still ride that ride all Lombardo style.! it is metal afterall.. but when i can, i change it up from time to time

Play along, in time with just your kick drum. Once you feel like you are in the pocket, add the snare. Again, once you feel locked in, add the hi-hat. But only on the snare hits. Once locked in again, add it to the kick hits too. At that point, you should be on your way. once you can hold it down in a 4/4 way, start expanding and adding accents.

Your going to fuck up so be patient.

Also, turn your brain off. Drumming is completely illogical to your mind. It makes no sense. So don't think. Just hit.

I got rid of my kit a while ago but to help develop limb independence I remember setting the metronome really slow, like, ridiculously slow, and picking patterns to trade off between hands and feet. Start slow enough you can keep the patterns steady. I had that same problem with wanting to hit the hat every time I hit the kick. It took several days of really slow pattern shifting back and forth and then several weeks of speeding it up a little at a time before I broke that habit, but once it was gone it was gone for good. And like paul said, don't think about it. It's all about feel.
