Broke out the PV 5150 combo, turned it up and NWOBHM?
Thats what I heard anyway.. So I made up some old school metallzz. This is my PV Wolfgang, stock everything. In to the combo green channel. Turned up about as loud as it goes before it goes to hell. Which is 5 on the dial. So its cranked.. Playing it thru my 5150 cab.. Uh-oh another clip of those speakers that nobody knows how to mic apparently.. just a 57 on it.. So I originally started out to saying, lets try Eddies settings on the combo! I was really creative this week and wrote some tunes and today I just wanted to jam and keep it simple and I never actually tried his settings on the combo. Including the VOLUME. As thats important.. And they sound very EDDIE.. But when I went to the rhythm channel it sounded like Motorhead or sumthin.. So thats the direction I went
Using that Ugritone Drums for Humanity .. Using the "slayer" type kit which was based on the 86 reign in blood album, so I figured that fit too! Used my Steve Harris Tech 21 bass little thing and I knew they had a setting for "Lemmy" and it did! SO I dialed in Lemmy! haha

Re: Broke out the PV 5150 combo, turned it up and NWOBHM?
sweet. I gotta be honest it’s fun jamming this type of stuff. I rejoined my old band which for extreme stuff, we can’t do more extreme or more crazy shit. And my thrash project was becoming more extreme because I was trying to maybe fill that void. But now that I have that outlet again, I think I can roll shit back more on my other projects and just have more funGuitarBilly wrote:Sounds killer man!!!!!! Definitely captured that NWOBHM vibe. But true this stuff wasn’t around, but it’s still mid 90s for the amp. And according to what I’ve heard the rhythm channel was based on the VTM. Which was based on hot rodded Marshall’s. And these Sheffield’s were based on old beat up greenbacks. So I. Some round about way, this stuff was designed around that sorta sound! At least that’s my logic. Lol, and that tech 21 thing is the Steve Harris model and HE was around then as well… So it’s all somewhat modern gear, Altho it’s crazy to think my combo is closing in on 30yo, it’s still sorta based on players and tones from the 70s and 80s

Re: Broke out the PV 5150 combo, turned it up and NWOBHM?
Of course I had to do a red channel clip. Again, volume on 5 which sorta decreases the saturation. Plus these Sheffield 1200 speakers, as Ive always known, this is their sweet spot. They need some volume and they legit change into a damn close greenback. I did some A/B against my EVH deletions and they really are not far apart at all..

Cool. You think it sounds familiar? Honestly like the head, these take on a much more “vintage” high gain tone when they get cranked. And I know you rarely kick your shit above 1! Haha. Honestly anything above 4 changes the tone from that saturated, compressed, almost dark tone to this brighter, cutting and less saturated sound. I think the less saturation is the most significant change. The power tubes really become part of the tone when cranked. So it always bugs me when I hear , “5150’s gain all comes from the preamp so it doesn’t need to be loud”. For the most part all the gain is in the preamp, but if you want to open up that classic EVH type tone, then the power tubes getting hammered is absolutely the final piece to that puzzle…
The 5150 heads really change when using em with the post gain on noon.
I remember a buddy who’s in his 50s and big EVH guy, was one of these “the 5150s sound nothing like Eddie’s tone or brown sound”. And to some degree they dont until it’s turned up. I’m like they do. Just no one uses em like he designed em. And I turned it up to 6 and played literally 2 chords and his eyes almost popped out of his head! Hahah. He was floored with how close it actually sounded to early 80s Eddie. The combos get a little brighter than the heads when slammed, but these have a very profound tone change when cranked. And anyone who thinks Eddie didn’t use the PVs back in the day. Or the Sheffield loaded cabs, simply never turned these amps up to where they sound remarkably like early Van Halen. Mixed with a bit of that Soldano thing he was getting into in the early 90s. And really, even on the heads a boost isn’t exactly needed with that level of volume. They tighten up simply thru everything being hammered like that

+1 about the 5150/6505 sounding more like a classic amp when you turn it up. Eddie really designed them for the preamp and power amp sections to be pushed together.

Ha Awesome.
At home, yeah, I never really turn shit up too loud. Small room and loud is like sensory overload for me and makes me feel physically uncomfortable lol. But those amps came to a lot of band practices and shows with me over the years, and needed to be cranked up more than some other amps to get heard over things. Probably still not as high as you're cranking it, but it does still have that familiarity to it.

That definetly has an amount of mids I don't associate with a fiddy!

Back in the HCAF before I knew these sucked ass, I recorded the first 3 albums of my one band all with the Sheffield’s that came in the combo. And I was pretty happy with the first 2 I did, but by the 3rd one it was definitely the best I did sonically and I would always post a clip from it and most would agree it sounded really good, but no one seemed to change their opinion on em. Lol. It’s like, here ya go. 57 on a Sheffield using a 5150 combo. It couldn’t have been a simpler setup and looking back I guess even I was surprised at how the old combo’s cabinet recorded. I wish I never took the head portion out and made it seperate. I’ve definitely been toying with the idea of remaking the combo back into its original form!
Anyway I’m rambling as I tend to do. So thanks! Lol
thanks brougham!Devin wrote:Sounds awesome
The combo gets a little more Marshally when pushed than the head but that also will get the less saturated and more “vintage” type high gain when pushed into true power tubes distortionZozobra wrote:That definetly has an amount of mids I don't associate with a fiddy!

Sounds tits!!
I have always loved the Peavey 5150/6505 series of amps. The funny thing is I am not a metal player but I love the way it can own a mix (in a different way than a vintage Marshall). I played the 5150 combo on a few occasions and have to say it is one of my favorite combo amps ever. I easily like it as much (if not more) than the head and 4x12. There is just something special about the combos in my opinion.
