Comparsion of 2 very similar amps! 6505 vs 5153 el34

Post by EndTime »

Since IM getting ready to finalize some recordings, Im A/B'ing some tones and which direction I want to go.. So I put in the Soviet 6L6wxt+ in the 6505 and I'll be.. They really do kinda take me back to what made me like these amps in the first place! They aren't as muddy as the JJ's and just seem to have a bit more... IDK Crystal Lattuce!

So my 6505 is almost back to stock except a couple things. I have the choke installed. AND for the Green channel I clipped a capacitor that added all the low end to the Green(rhythm) channel.. And since I do feel the need to boost the 6505, not always tho, but mostly I do.. And even tho a million and one people boost the Red and Are just fine, I think I simply play too hard and I always get a little bit of this mid push (crack) that I usually try and dial out.. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Always preferred the overall character of boosting the Green channel, eve tho it still has this crack IM talking about.. Its certainly the PV character... SO with the capacitor clipped out, it basically tightens it up to be about the same as the Red channel. And clearly you can hear it gets plenty of gain. Id almost say it feels a touch more gained out..BUt its prolly the little less bass into the preamp..

I just bounced the Stereo git buss. So its 2 guitars.. L/R. Im using an EV N/D468 for the mic on an Celestion EVH speaker.. Boosting with the Horizon Devices Precision Drive. Using Amy Star with the Antiquity JB. I Then used my 5153 EL34 100 watt into the blue channel. Same boosts, speakers etc and lets hear the difference!! I think for me I hear the punch of the EL34 and has more growl to it.. And prolly cause I run the presence higher om the 6505 you hear all those upper frequency harmonics.. But in the end they can get pretty close, especially thru the same speakers..

The EVH is flat out better IMO. The attack is exactly what I would be looking for in that clip. Awesome. 6505 is fine, but listening back to back like this, I will choose that EVH tone every time.

I clearly like both. The 6505 is richer almost. And those sorta hard mids I hear do sumthin good in a mix. But the 5153 has those specific PV mids dialed OUT! Just simply playing I would take the 5153 most of the time. In the mix, it’s a tough call sometimes. The PV is just a tad more brutal. Not saying the 5153 is softer by any means. It’s equally brutal, it’s just a little more refined. In a lot of ways that’s good, but again, sometimes that bit of ugly and “un” perfected sound of the 6505 is the bit of nasty that just works.

Both are great. The OG 6505 is one of my favorite all time amps. I also love the EVH versions, just never had one. It's too close to call for me.

Carvin MTS3212 Combo
Hamer XT DC with Sheptone Red headed step childs

Yep very close. Which was sorta my intention was to see how similar I can get but the 6505 and OG 5150 just have a thickness that almost no amps can replicate. I mean Rectifiers I’m sure but ever since the first version the 5150 line has gotten tighter and more plug and play. No version since the first has this thick of a tone. And just for that alone, it’s sumthin I can’t live without! Haha

I like them both. The 6505 is warmer and has more of an old school vibe . The EVH has more cut and more of a modern edge. I guess it depends what you're going for. They do sound like the decades they were created. Interesting.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Using my junk work earbuds, those sounded almost identical to me. Both were great!

I'm liking the focus and definition of the 5153, but might prefer the 6505 in a mix.

EVH seems to get rid of the clanky metallic high mids that I loathe on Peaveys. Always had to use an eq when I had peaveys.
