mic/speaker combinations - a million clips

Post by NinjaRaf »

I am tired of exporting haha. But this was actually pretty fun. I used my new BD DT700 pro x headphones to dial in my mic positions, recorded 2 mics at a time (one on the V30 and one on the Redback). Took about an hr to mic and record all of this and then another fucking hr of exporting lolol.

I think I want to get a couple more mics. I can't believe I still don't have an MD421. And I'm on the fence about the M201. I bought that mic a couple of times, now, and I am not sure if I really made the right choice selling it. I think I didn't really give it the right kind of run through, so maybe.

Race, I finally busted out the Audix D2s just for you haha.

Only mics that I have that I didn't use are the Audix D6 and Samson Q7. The Q7 actually isn't bad, but I dunno, I really only use it for talk back when doing drums these days.

As I was micing, I found the combos I thought sounded best were the V30/PR30+RB/Lewitt and V30/E906+RB/TGI51. So I spit those out as combo tracks. If you wanna hear anything paired up, I can export that lol.

Anyway...this is a lot of fucking clips lolol

None of these clips are bad really, they all work. And after listening to a number of them I started to lose reference.... so take my post with a grain of salt.

If I had to rank them:

I like the V30s clips over the Redback clips, generally speaking. But I think maybe you could get good results mixing the 2. If you're using one speaker, go with the V30.

In terms of mics, I like the 906 and the 57 over the others. But the other mics are fine too. If I had to choose one to be my least favorite is the D2. It sounds a bit fluffy and pillow-y  it's not bad, but the other mics have more presence I think

So in short V30 with the 906 was my favorite, followed by the 57/V30. which is funny because it's how I record my guitars here  So I could have guessed that without listening. But it's cool to listen and see how well that held up. But it also could be that this is the combination my ears are more used to :idk:

Yup! I've used it on vocals, acoustic, guitar cabs, and as drum OHs. I have a pair of them. They do sound great, especially considering they aren't much more than an SM57. And combining one with a 57 on a guitar cab is a great sound, too.

Thanks for posting these!
I am digging the 906 the most, then 57 and the Lewitt on the V30.
The RB ones sound great too, I think my ears are just used to V30s.
I can see any of these using in combos and I would end up in rabbit hole test land

Added one with 2 57s using my Fredman clip

haha yeah, that's how I was feeling yesterday. What combos are gonna sound best? Start turning the tracks on and off. Problem is, with this much stuff, you start losing focus and you can't decide which is better.

I think what I've learned here is that basically any of them will work lol.

I was particularly interested in the e 906 vs 57 as that’s the 2 mics I’m currently working with. In my own testing, I always feel like the e906 sits better in the mix, just clearer. I keep futzing with the position of my 57, but that doesn’t seem to help. In your clips I feel I’m hearing the same thing. The e906 just sits better. it’s not louder, but it just sounds more up front. Thanks for these clips!!

I completely agree with the bolded part. After I heard the 3rd or 4th clip I started to lose my reference point. And yes, all these mics will work. It's just a matter of you deciding what you want your tone to be like.

For me, and this is on my busted ass desktop earbuds at work, I'd say Fredman, then Redback < V30. 906 or the TGI51 being the best of the V30.

None of them sound bad at all, but the beef of the V30 906/51 really hits me right.

That TGI51 is a cool little mic. I think I got it when they were like $80. It sat in a bag and I forgot about it until we played our first show with the Mesa, since I used the cabclone to go to the IEM instead of the mic haha. Yay surprise mic! haha It is a pretty cool one, though. Sorta sits between the 57 and 906 in some ways.

Personally, the Fredman has been my favorite so far! Really digging what that combo is doing. Stupid SM57s always working good and shit lol.

Maybe I will combine the tgi and 906 in a similar way as the 2 57s and see what that does.

Also, hilariously enough, I agree that the V30s are doing the fucking thing. So annoying haha.

That is annoying. V30s at home recording volumes are horrible as hell to sit near.

Probably why I was never a big fan of them. But these days, I am recording at almost band practice volumes. The sweet spot on the master is a bit lower than band practice. It's loud as balls and sounds awesome in the room haha. Practice, my bass player is always asking me to turn up, so I get a bit louder.

I eliminated this option paralysis when SSL had a sale on Guitarstrip. Pop it on, pick a preset, turn off their "distort everything to the fucking ground" add-on and it's spot-on exactly what I wanted to hear in my guitar tracks. It took it from, "That's pretty good," to "God damn, that sounds like somebody that knew what they were doing when they recorded my amp."
