Dark NAD

Post by bubbastain »

After being curious about this amp forever, I finally picked one up. $350 was the right price to do it. What a cool and fucking brutal amp. A shit tone of gritty gain that I'm kinda digging these days. However my favorite tone is with the gain at 11 o'clock, shape knob at 11 o'clock and then boosted with the Bion boost. It cleans up pretty good on its own, but with the Bion on it cleans up better and stays brighter which I like. I accidentally put the mic closer to the center of the speaker than normal, but here's a little video.

Sounds killer. The regular TT is nice too.

I love my Rockerverb but still want one of these for THAT specific Orange sound. Plus I can always slave this into my Rockerverb’s power section :hmm:

After playing it some more today I am even more impressed with this thing. It's pretty damn loud. What's awesome though is that it doesn't fall apart into some sloppy mess when you turn it up loud. I played it with the volume at 3 o'clock (and even full blast) and it didn't fall apart. This is with the gain at 11 o'clock and running into two 4x 12's.
Also, I can get it to sound pretty damn similar to my VTM60. Plus, I can get it to sound way more saturated and filthy ( in a good way) if I want.
I'm currently playing it through two 4x12's. One is loaded with Sheffield 1200's from a 5150 cab, and the other is loaded with Sheffield 1290's. In that clip in the OP I mic'd up the 1290. I have some V30's and K85's that I'll try with it too.

Now here is what I wish Orange would do. Release a Dark version with the same features as the new OR30. Even better, a Dark 50 with a pair of EL34's. Even better-er, still make it a metal lunchbox design, although slightly bigger and make it in China so I can afford it.

They have a Dual Dark 50 with EL34s but quite a jump in price!

Yeah, I played one briefly several years ago. They are discontinued and are not cheap. Cool amp for sure. Although I would just prefer a single channel.

I like the tonality of the dark terror. I actually like the mini dark terror ss head a lot too. I wish they would borrow some of the topology and tones and create a Dark Crush series of amps. Saw Kings X back in July and Ty was using an Orange Crush 120 head and two 4x12 cabs with HX Effects with MiM Strats with a JB JR mini bucker and sounded massive as always. They have some of the best-sounding amps around.
