New Mic Day - Sennheiser e906

Post by dstroud »

I must say the Sennheiser e906 is an awesome mic for a 4x12 cab. I do tons of recording, but I’m no pro. I could get a good sound micing my 4x12 using a sm57 or Heil PR-20, but I never felt I got the real sound of the amp. I hesitate to use multiple mics due to phasing issues and my lack of confidence to be able to hear that. So on a whim I ordered the e906. Man, to me this mic absolutely captures my amps whole sound. It’s also got a 3 position treble switch. I usually dial my amps in dark, but with the mic’s presence boost, it can add really nice top end if you like. Happy New Mic day here!! :)

Congrats. I just sold one. I think the Audix I5 are close enough to the sound.

Definitely a good mic. Almost a 100% better than the 609, which is most close to the Brightest setting of the 906. But even in my experience the 906 on bright was still better. But middle setting of the 906 gets the best balance, to me, and full sound without much hassle

yeah I read the 609 was really bright. on the 906 I prefer the flat setting as well, but I did like that the frequencies on the treble boost didn’t make it piercing.

My 906 is perpetually stored against one of my speaker grills. It never gets put away. As point and shoot easy as it can get.

Nice! I remember thinking this when I went from a 609 to a 906 years ago. Haven't had one in a long time, now, though.

EDIT: WOW! Those really shot up in price, eh?

I love my 906. I also have the 609. Definitely a different beast. Much grainier sounding, if that makes sense. Almost harsh in the upper-mids and highs.

The i5 is closer to the 906 than the 609, but sorta has it's own thing going on.

My two favorites for mics are my 906 and the m160. 160 on the center or 906 to the side of the dust cap. Either one will sound as close to "that's my amp" coming out of the monitors as you can possibly get.

Congrats. It's a great mic.

The m160 is on my radar. I hope it’s the last microphone I buy.

I got mine today and wow man you were not kidding. This is awesome. After some work positioning the mic, I am getting my real amp tone to translate exactly right to the DAW. I feel dumb for not trying this mic earlier, this is going to be my go-to guitar mic from now on. I may even take it with me to gigs and ask the sound guy to use it.

I am using a short mic stand. I tried to hang it/drape over the cab but it was hard to position it that way. I am also using it closer to the edge of the speaker.

I've been comparing the room sound with the recorded sound and it's super accurate.
