Ive pulled this thing apart dozens, literally. of times.. Every time I said I wouldn't do it again, I have.. But its stayed pretty consistent now for the past month and every time I feel *maybe I can get it just a bit more perfect, I play it and its right there..
Anyway, besides the choke (I also did the Mercury OT, which Ive since pulled out and put the original Chinese one back.. They are subtle but I prefer the original.. I did a gain reduction mod.. This has usually ended up losing some of what I love while gaining more control and a little less harsh distortion, but I feel I got the perfect value for me where its more controllable bu still heavy and brutal like 5150 should..
So..What say you? Thru an original 90s Peavey 5150 cab which Ive seriously grown in love with.. I think the cab I got sat around for many many years and it was kinda hard sounding when I got it, but I really think its broken in as well.. I think it simply wasn't used hard until I got it.. These stock speakers sound amazing to me..
quick clip.. Using my Fender Strat with an Antiquity JB boosted with the MXR bad ass OD

It still sounds very much like a 6505 but much wider and more open sounding than the stock amp. You should start selling this mod lol
Absolutely killer!!

Re: Quick 6505 clip, which Ive finally got just the right mo
Hah thanks. And I agree totally. It still sounds very much how I’d want it but it really is more open and less congestion in those mids. After having the Evh 5153 for awhile those PV mids could be offensive if my ears weren’t in the right place. But this seems to soften the mids just enough while not affecting much else.
And without the boost it’s definitely a bit kinder sound because the gain is clearly lower but if I had to say how I think it sounds, is it gets back a bit of what the VTM was. Which is apparently what they used to get EVH on board and started tweaking from there.
But when boosted it’s still pretty much as it should be. But the gain knob needs to be higher. So instead of 3-4 on the lead gain, this is on 6. But down to 5 still sounds good and all the up to 10 basically can be used if you really want to have a ton of gain. Simply, the gain has a lot more usable range
