Tonex pedal
Yesterday I went to see a friend's band. He is a solid player with good tone, he usually plays a JVM 410H.
I get there and he has this Tonex pedal instead. He's recording an album and the amp is in the studio and he didn't want to move it or mess with the settings etc so he bought this thing. I'm like "Oh FFS, I could have loaned you one of my amps" but ok.
But anyway, it actually sounded decent. Not nearly as good as his usual tone to be honest, but one thing I noticed is that it sat in the mix a lot better than the usual modeling stuff. I don't much about it or how it works but it's some progress, I think.
Is anyone using it here? How do you like it?

Re: Tonex pedalll
well geez, this thing is basically exactly what ive been asking for now for years, and its only $400. it sounds pretty darn close in the comparison at the end, i would have liked if he compared the amp with the tonex running through the loop which is how id like to use it.

Re: Tonex pedalll
Yeah I think that's where modeling is going to thrive: good sounding units for $300-400. If I need to spend $1k+ I'm buying an amp. But I don't mind spending pedal money in it every couple of years or so.

I don't know about apps. I assume it has one?
Anyway, I ordered one to test it out. For $400 I'll keep it if it's decent enough.

Re: Tonex pedal
I bought one when they came out, not only was it cheap but there was a discount code that made it even cheaper. Sadly its just collecting dust since I use this kind of stuff on a pc more so than a pedal format. Shortly after I was messing with Tonex I came across NAM which was more my speed in terms of software/amp/vst.

Re: Tonex pedal
Their software sucked when it was released. I could never get logged into it to try it out. So I never bought it I should try it again I still have enough jam points to get it for $300

Yeah I have low expectations tbh but if it sounds decent for 400 bucks I'll keep it just in case I need a modeler here and there

Re: Tonex pedal
I haven’t played with the hardware unit, but I messed around a bit with the plugin. I found NAM was much better and more accurate. The drawback is there is no hardware unit for NAM, but it’s free!

Re: Tonex pedal
software is a PITA, the factory amps aren't too great.
the Tonenet profiles are where its at ... there are some really good ones out there, some swear better than Kemper/Fractal/Quad Cortex, but i've never used those devices
i just use mine into the loop of a Digitech GSP1101 for effects, and (temporarily) into EVH effects return, and only download the "amp only" captures - you can filter what you're looking for in Tonenet, which makes browsing them all a lot easier.
you do need to remember that the "gain" knob is not amp gain ... its the input signal level. you may need to mess with that to get it sounding the way you want.
Jason Sadites has a bunch of good explanation and tutorial videos for the Tonex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g98QCpI ... sonSadites

Re: Tonex pedal
Yeah the idea is to go the Tonenet and find a good Marshall and a good clean profile and keep it in the gig bag as a backup/di option.

you could even capture yours, set how you like it ...
i never tried a capture, easier to just grab them on Tonenet

Clunky af. Good sounds but for me, 1 capture session out of like 20 seemed to work. Great amp substitute in a direct board if you can get a cap or two of your amp at the sweetspot?

Is anyone using it here? How do you like it?
I bought one a couple weeks ago. I’m preferring it over the Helix modeling. Currently running it into the loop of a Boss GT1000 Core but just picked up an HX Stomp and will run the Tonex in the loop. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Plus the small form factor is a major selling point for me.
I think their software editor is trash, though. I’m spoiled by Line 6’s UI, which I think is impeccable and very intuitive. But I’m just using this for my base tones so I’m ok with that part.

Nice. I'm thinking about doing a similar setup but with my Boss MS-3.

The Amalgam Audio captures are pretty good to my ears. It’s not the same experience as using an amp but it sounds great for my cover band needs.

Re: Tonex pedal
I love how small the ToneX is, but my question for those who are currently using one, is the amount of presets/captures/IR's etc they have online basically a smattering of mediocre to awesome to which you have to wade through?
I'd like to try the ToneX, but I'm more afraid that I'd do more tinkering than playing.

I haven't started to look at their database yet, but that's probably accurate.
I think that's the case for most modeling devices though, but I don't know if I can blame the technology for it.
It's up to the player to decide how much they want to keep tweaking. When I had the Kemper, I went through a bunch of profiles initially, but once I found a few I really liked it, I deleted all the others and never connected the Kemper online again.
So my plan is to do something similar with this.
But there is nothing wrong with tweaking either, it's a hobby in its own right, but I don't usually have the patience for it.

Re: Tonex pedal
Sifting through the pile is mandatory.
My biggest issue with it was I wanted to capture my amps and it was very hit and miss. So off it went and back to the Stomp and the FM I went. I don't think any profiling device perfectly captures the nuances of any of these rare/boutique/oddball amps that I will never have in hand and that none of the big players of modeling will ever end up putting in their platforms. Beyond capturing my own amps; that is the selling point for me. And where I go "eh" with most of these types of solutions.

I can see that. I may try to capture my rig at some point but it's not a priority because frankly, my rig is nothing special. It's either the DSL or the EVH.
So as long as there decent profiles of these amps readily available I'm good. Maybe a Mesa profile for something different here and there.
I'm also different in the sense that I don't care about having oddball amps, because I probably wouldn't use them for anything serious.
My gear purchases/needs are very performance oriented. I'm not a "power user" that will dive into all the functions and possibilities.
I basically want the device to do the 1-2 things I need to perform.
But it has to do them well. So we'll see.

Re: Tonex pedal
I got this yesterday but finally had the chance to try it out today. I haven't done much with it yet, just scrolling through the amps that came with it but it sounds really good so far. The 800 and 5150 are pretty accurate IMHO. I already like it better than the modelers/profilers I've owned before. It sounds very natural and it is extremely easy to use. I am fairly certain I am going to keep this, at the very least to use it in the studio. The tones I'm getting from it are definitely good enough for my studio use and that alone is worth the price of admission. I doubt I will ever use it live, but I will try it out at practice at some point.
But yeah this is a good unit.
