First gig with the Plexi

Post by GuitarBilly »

Played the first show with the 1987x tonight. Amp sounded great probably the best tones I've had in a long time.

I had to attenuate it A LOT because I was dealing with one of those "soundguys" that have no idea how to mix rock music and are afraid of guitar amps. So the guy asked to turn it down until I could barely hear it and then put it back on the wedges, which obviously sounded awful.

But it doesn't matter because it sounded great out front and I'm used to deal with this type of stuff so I just basically ignore my monitors and just play.

But anyway the tone out front was everything I was hoping for, just great. Before the show we had practice at our lockout and the amp sounded glorious.

I'll see if there is some video later.

I need to figure out an attenuator for it. The Rock Crusher is great but it's huge. The Bugera sounds decent enough and it's a good size but I don't trust it at all lol

But I digress. Important part is the amp passed the first gig test with flying colors

Can’t beat the real thing, but how would this amp fare with bad sound people?

I think the power scale going down to 20w will probably still be very loud. I have the 20w Plexi and I've been comparing the 2. The 20w is quieter but it will still need an attenuator. This guy makes quality stuff though.

Yeah I was wrong when I said the synergy was the best tone you’ve had. This is so perfect for this kinda shit.

You know, this is giving me an idea. Maybe I should get the Plexi module for my Syn1 and run into this power section when I have to play quietly. That is about the same price and size of an attenuator and definitely more versatile :hmm:

Have you tried running the Caline English Man into the Plexi for low volume saturation?

Never tried this myself, but maybe something to consider if you haven't already. Copied from RacerXrated on RT:

Question: That's funny because my very next question was: the old Marshall plexi you used on the early albums (Breaker, Restless and Wild, Balls to the Wall) created a sound that was a lot more "heavy metal" than say the typical "hard rock" plexi sound of AC/DC or Jimmy Page. How did you achieve that more metal sound?

Wolf: Right. That again was born out of necessity. If you cranked the Marshall all the way to 10 or to 7 or 8, you could use the Distortion Plus' Output control to regulate the Marshall's volume so that you could bring it down to a volume you could actually play with. In essence you have a master volume effect — the amp is still sweating, but you can control the volume. The Distortion control was set not all the way up, but almost all the way up. You can still do it today. The only bad part is you get a lot of noise. We always had to turn down the volume immediately if there was a break. I say "we" — whoever the other guitarist was at the time would use the same set up. We always kind of did that as a team. That trained me real well, and I still do it to this day, but with the advent of hush units you don't need all that stuff.

This 45$ Joyo Uzi does the same thing, I'm still double boosting with the OD1X but adding the Uzi has allowed a super thick saturated tone at really low volumes.

That is proper, fundamental Marshall tone. Well done.

Are you looking at PS100 for it?

Yeah dude don’t sell this one. This fits you so well. Also second on the power station.

Actually with the power station you could effectively use that not only as an attenuator/power amp, but also use it for its loop and get your rack effects in there.

Pretty sure I will get one eventually. they're sold out everywhere at the moment and the Rivera RockCrusher does a decent job with the attenuation, but the PS100 would be the next level.

I was also talking to my amp tech here and he said he can install a PPIMV for 80 bucks and it's easily reversible if I don't like it, so I think I will try that next.
