Weird pickups

Post by exafro »

I have a Fender Pawnshop strat incoming and it has an Invader in the bridge with a vintage style tele neck pickup. Seems like an odd combo, so I think I need to do some pickup shopping. I have the brootz, strat and tele bases covered, so I want something different and/or unusual. Do I want gold foils, Wide Range, filtertrons? P90 maybe? All I really need is hum cancelling and something that will pair nicely with the neck pup. What ahould I be looking for?

Wide Range would be great. Like a reversed 70s Tele Custom.

P90s are great but I'd get a mahogany set neck guitar with them.

Filtertrons could definitely work. I had a Cabronita tele with them that sounded awesome. I miss that guitar.

Gold Foils are a no for me.

I'd do a filtertron type. They hum cancel, as they are buckers, but will match the neck pick up. A filtertron bridge sounds a lot like a tele, anyway. Wide range are similar but will require routing as would a full sized p90. You have lots of options.

I love Filter’trons so I second that option.

I like Wide Range the most But, beware, most of them are bigger than the humbucker rout.

I would recommend Creamery for a HB sized WRHB, but he is taking like 5 months to deliver lately.

Porter has a HB sized WRHB for $142. This is the dude that repaired my Cunife Fender WRHB. I would trust him.

Novak has a HB sized WRHB with cunife for $230.

Out of all the strange twangy alternative pickups, filtertrons are probably my least favorite. They're versatile and humbucking, but they aren't really the best at anything IMO. I like dynasonics, P90's, and hilotrons better, but those are all single coil.

FWIW, Goldfoil is more of an aesthetic thing. True, classical gold foils from the 60's are wound strange with thick gauge coil wire, resulting in a very thin, twangy sound. Most modern gold foils are more for looks, but they can sound sort of twangy. The modern Harmony gold foil pickups from Heritage are badass. They sound sort of like mini humbuckers.

Lipstick pickups fuck pretty hard IMO, but I don't think they will drop right in to a tele neck pisscup route without modifying the guard (could be wrong on that tho)

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up finding a decently priced Fender WR on reverb and snagged it. If I'm not feeling it, I'll have to try some of these other suggestions.

Which fender WRHB? Most of those are just shitting fender humbuckers under a big cover. Not real WRHBs

I think 500 is a good place to start. They have that sparkly top end that a 250 might roll off.
