Anyone have experience with the standard PI vs the Op Amp version? I’ve been curious as of lately to give one a shot but wanted to hear from any of you fine gentlemen to see if it’s a big enough difference, perhaps even better, to own over the transistor models.

For Muff's manufactured by EHX, my favorite was the Pi with tone wicker

I own an OP Amp, a guy from work had the regular nano so I tried them side by side. The nano seemed to have a more smoother sound to it, the op amp can get nice and gritty. I was able to get some tones similar to the nano from the op amp one. My buddy preferred the op amp over his, I liked the nano enough that I wouldn't mind picking one up to also have.
I just ordered myself the Keeley Moon Op Amp that I want to try side by side on the EHX one. The Keeley sounds like it's got way more gain and much fuller than the EHX. Demo's I heard, it can do David Gilmour stuff very well and if you max out the fuzz, you can do heavy thick sludgy doom stuff, so I may be selling my EHX to the guy at work.

^YES  It's been a long time but there was such a great clarity to it, while still being just gross in the best of ways. Like it lifted a fuzz blanket off things and just left this sizzling fuzzy aftermath that was still a fuzz pedal but just more articulate or something? It's been a decade at least I would say for me? Maybe not quite but close. I have no use for fuzz but it sure sounded mean \m/

I'm a Muff guy. I have tried every variant.

The Op amp is one of my least favorite. Sounds like a chainsaw. Loses the charm of transistors.

The Civil War/Red Army is bassy, huge, and epic.
The Ram's Head is versatile, saturated, and warm.
The Triangle is huge, wooly, boomy, and exciting.

I don't like the reverse logo models that came after the ram's head. They lack bass in a way that sucks.
Green Russians are cool.
Black Russians are pretty good. (the V8 4 screw, the very last russian muff, is considerably less good than the earlier black Russians like the V7D and V8 6 screw.)

BTW, Stomp Under Foot makes the very best Muffs.

Skreddy makes good stuff too, but it usually has trimmed up bass to be more useful in typical rock band settings.

The Red Army broslinger sold me is one of my favorite fuzz pedals, and by far my favorite Muff I've tried to date. Just super inspiring to play without the weird quirks of the actual EHX stuff.

And by quirks I mean their shitty build quality. I can't count how many old Muffs I've owned but good riddance. SUF will get my money from here on out.

Let me know what you’re looking for. I’m a muff curator with lots of great stuff in stock.

I hand picked the muff with which Dave fell in love.

To be honest, I am not sure. I love more organic sounds and tones. Muff's alway struck me as sort of mechanical sounding. But, regardless, I haven't spent any significant time playing any of them. So I have no idea.

Holy fuck SUF has all of the bases covered. I've heard of the brand but never bothered to check out the website. I may just pick up 2-3 of these and compare them.

Back in '94 I bought a EHX Green Russin Muff that came in the wooden box and that thing was ridiculous. It was my first fuzz pedal and I wasn't prepared for that madness haha. For whatever reason I was drawn to the chrome box NYC muff at the time because of the pumpkins so I bought one used off from a newspaper classifieds but that thing sounded like a toy in comparison. I was a young noob and had no idea he had an op amp version. I ended up selling both for a new guitar sadly.

I think I'm going to try out the civil unrest, pumpkin pie and either the civil war or red army. Of those last two, which do you think I'd like more? I dig the wall of sound thing if that helps any.

I would get a normal civil war. I didn’t like the civil unrest. Adding the mids knob changes the muff. Takes away the muffiness.

Bumping this because my Hizumitas has rekindled my love of Muffs. And now I'm looking at some other makers and circuits. Mainly SUF. I know the Red Army is loved around a couple folks here but htey don't pop up often unless he does a run. Does anyone have any experince with the Astoria, standard Ram's Head and Civil War? Those would be the main ones I'm looking it, particularly the Astoria.

EDIT: Saw Gene's post above. Any pros/cons to the Astoria over the Ram's Head?

I know I don't like Muffs with a mids knob but what else is out there besides SUF? I have tried Black Arts toneworks and Solidgoldfx. Also I have never had a problem with my EHX muffs is there any reason why I might go for a SUF ram's head over the EHX version tone wise?

Some great advice so far.

This is probably my favorite muff clone, the Rudetech 3muf14. Got a few modes for different versions, plus a tone stack bypass, and a switchable mid boost if you need it to actually cut thru a mix, which most muffs can't seem to do without some help from another pedal. :idk:

Image

My most versatile muff clone has gotta be the JHS. There's gotta be one in there you'll like.

I just discovered the joy of boosting my Hizumitas with my SD-1 (volume and tone both around 1 o clock, gain off) and it sounds glorious with single coils. Add my Small Clone after for some shimmer and a delay or verb of choice (loving the Afterneath with it) and it’s probably my favorite lead tone yet.
