New Build

Post by scottdh »

Finished this one last month. Black walnut body, maple/purpleheart neck, kingwood fretboard, ABM bridge, aluminum side dots, 27" scale. The pickup is a Dimarzio Multibucker that was wound years ago for a friend who runs a music shop. It's a Super Distortion and Tone Zone in one housing, wired in series (no switching). Really fun, beefy sounding double humbucker. Tried a new material for the nut this time - Polyoxymethylene. Worked really well, shaped a little easier than GraphTech, and it's available in 10mm thick sheets.

That is a gorgeous instrument. I really like the single bucker/just a volume config too. So much wood.

Super nice looking. Love the deep dark color and simplicity.

Curious, that large semi-circle recess surrounding the neck pocket on the back, is that just an aesthetic design or is there a practical reason for it? Looks very pleasing either way. Nice job.

Thanks very much! So, I got the idea from an old Robin Guitars Medley that I got from the same guy who gave me the pickup. It has a similar recess on the back, presumably to help with upper fret access, and I thought it was cool. Necessary? Probably not :D

Aah - wondered what that was about.

You would think, if anything, GoogleUserContent would work with Chrome! WTF!?!?

I had a early 00's Jackson Dinky DKMGT with a similar cutout on the back. It was more offset towards the lower horn and a little less pronounced, but did help with upper fret access on a thicker body.

Really nice looking build! There are a few visual things that would bother me after a while (I'd prefer a narrower waist, deeper cutaways.. just some visual design details). But, the execution looks stunning!

Thanks so much! I think you're right design-wise. I'm going to look at some slight mods to the curves in the waist area, and the cutaways were actually bugging me a little too. I don't think it will take much to get them more in line (for future builds, anyway). Appreciate the input!

Samick/Valley Arts used to advertise this feature big time in the 90's
