JRE moving to Spotify - $100M deal

Probably the biggest "media shift" deal since Stern move to Sirius. Interested to see what that will mean for the podcast industry. Could be a good thing or it could be the end of independent podcasting, we'll see.

It will still be free on spotify and this gets him out from under the policies of google/youtube.

Gotta say Spotify has to be making a move to run podcasts on the same level they do music.

Smart move to get one of the biggest podcasts in the game if thats your goal.

This is a huge deal. Spotify is buying podcasts up, but things like the Ringer are still going to be available everywhere. The whole of JRE is now strictly Spotify exclusive, including video.

I’m happy for him, and have enjoyed the podcast...but I won’t be making the move to Spotify. I pay for Apple Music and use Overcast for podcasts (or occasionally the podcast iPhone app.) I’m not inclined to sign up for Spotify unless my wife and I switch away from Apple Music for..,well...our music.

He won’t miss me though, I’m a tiny drop in a huge bucket. And the upside of this deal is huge for Spotify.

I know a lot of people are upset that musicians aren’t making money there but “someone who just talks” is. He’s pushing insane numbers on listeners and downloads...and totally deserves this

yeah my understanding is that you will not need to have a Premium (paid) account with Spotify to listen/watch the JRE podcast. It will be available as free content.

I already have a premium account so it wouldn't affect me either way but I am not sure if I will follow him there too. At the moment, I use Spotify exclusively for music. My whole account is organized like a virtual collection, it would be weird to mix talk show content in there IMHO.

I also feel that this move devalues music even further, nothing to do with JRE per se, but I don't like the idea of people not even having a dedicated app for music only. For upcoming artists it's already hard to get new listeners on Spotify as it is. Having to also compete with podcast traffic makes it even harder for upcoming bands IMHO.

As for being free from YT/Google rules... ehhh I am sure Spotify has their own rules too, or at least they will once they become big enough in the podcast/video business...

As long as there is still video I'm cool with it. I rarely get far in an audio-only podcast

This. Also; I do not have the attention span for a 2hr+ podcast. Can't. Do. It. Strip that shit back to a half hour and I am golden. I spent so much time digging through the Devin podcasts. Love the guy and the subject matter but it was sooooooooo deep and personal/introspective and so long form compared to what I was expecting I had trouble with it. That might be more of a me thing though. :idk:

Naw the first few Dev podcasts were fantastic but in the later ones he spends wayyyyy too much time talking about basically nothing at all. It's not just you

There's short clip segments of JRE episodes that are cool to browse for that reason Jive.

But for me personally the 2+ hours nature of some podcasts is my favorite part, especially when it's a politician or influential public figure. It's not easy to maintain a fake persona for that long in an uninterrupted conversation. You start getting a better sense of who some of these people are.

Yeah I watch these from time to time. I have been pulling away from YT as of late. Not sure why but overloaded on really everything atm.

I was under the impression you could still get the JRE shows on whatever platform you currently get your podcasts, no?

Joe puts out way too much content for me to digest. It's awesome, I just dont have that much free time, lol. I usually check out a few of his shows a month, and the occasional 10 min snippet on YT.

For now yes, but it will be Spotify exclusive starting September with the exception of small clips still posted on YT.

I used to watch JRE a lot more than I do now. I think getting too big was somewhat detrimental to the show, since Joe is now more aware of his influence on people and it changed his approach a bit.

But I like him for the most part and I still watch it depending on the guest.
This week he had some good ones with Patton Oswalt and Tony Hawk. Those were really fun.

Ah thanks, Bill. I wonder if the JRE will be available on the free version of Spotify, or if I'll have to subscribe.

I believe he said free version.
I see a lot of people online saying "I don't use spotify and I won't follow him there."
Makes me wonder how many non users will migrate. His show has become such a piece of the culture that I'd guess he won't lose all that many after a period of adjustment.
Especially with the clips page on YouTube continuing, people are going to get nibbles and want the whole thing.

I’m sure plenty of people will switch. I have an Apple Music account for my wife and I though, and I won’t be switching. I also have no interest in having both.

But I only listen on my phone. I know plenty of people watch on tv or computers in the background...probably a lot easier to get them

I did see a funny comment on Youtube where people were saying that they stopped listening to Rogan after the switch and instead just watch the JRE Clips channels instead lol.

Can't say they're incorrect, because I have forgotten all about Rogan unless the algorithm throws a clips channel my way.

Yeah I watch clips from Rogan, VladTV (for all my rap beef/drama) and some other topical channels all the time. I just can't dedicate an hour and a half 3 times a week to sit and listen to people blather on. The boiled down clips are much better for me.
