Help fixing a floyd rose bridge

Post by pakcjo »

Hello,

I recently noticed that the studs of my (licensed) floyd rose was tilted toward the neck, so I decided to replace it with a new one. Removing the old studs was super easy, they were totally loose and with a lot of wobbling. I was hoping the new ones to be wider but that wasn't the case, I can insert the new studs and remove them in both holes without any pressure at all, they have a lot of wobbling and if I turn the guitar over they just fall right away.

So I'm trying to decide what's best to do. My options are (please let me know if I'm missing something):

1. Glue the studs: Just fill the hole with glue and push the studs in. I have read people doing this but not sure if I really want to go this way, this will make incredibly hard to remove them later if needed, and also I'm not sure exactly which glue to use, wood glue? epoxy?

2. Apply glue to the edge of the hole: Not sure if this is effective, but I could try to apply glue with a q-tip around the hole in several layers to reduce the size, but the stud will go in the dry glue and not wood.

3. Cover the hole and redrill. I think this is the way to go, but probably the riskiest one. I don't have a drill press so that could be a problem, not sure if the cheap portable drill press or drill block guides in amazon would do the job. I can't afford to pay more than 30 USD in hardware that I'd only use once.

I have no experience working with wood, so any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you want this to be done right, fill the hole with a dowel and redrill it. Anything else is a compromise of sorts. I'd take it to a tech to do this if you're not comfortable, especially if this is a guitar you use/like a lot.
