Okay, Now It’s Going Down For Real
Good evening,
Thanks to my work colleagues, for this inebriate post, I am here to state that not only am I going to build a bass, but a guitar, as well. 7-string, all Purpleheart, Fluence pickups, Kahler trem. That was the clincher: When I had a Kahler trem for the guitar, I knew it was happening. Except that it hasn’t arrived yet. Jesus, I hate these life goals kicking me in the gentlemen’s vegetables. I can only imagine what you expectant parents have to deal with.
Thank you.

I approve of this message.
My life goal has been to build myself a guitar. I've only had that goal since I was a kid. But currently my workshop is still filled to the roof with flood leftovers from the bedroom. So maybe right now my life goal is to get a damn dumpster and move some of that garbage out of my main work space.

So, six weeks or so on, and. I have been squaring boards, and finalizing the design. It has to be final, because I used a red pencil, and that is used for new builds. As an inadvertent tribute to a certain deadly-departed, curmudgeonly forumite, I am doing something in the vein of a T-Style.
Still, I need some screws, a toggle switch, and the Kahler routing template. The template is on its way, the rest I need to order. I’m also strongly considering using purple oil paint as a stain, but I need to get the neck done first. I need all of the advice people are willing to give me.

Templates are for pussies! Freehand it!
Oh, and you're going to be in for a big surprise if you try to stain wood with oil paint!
Are you still drunk?

Re: Okay, Now It’s Going Down For Real
Well, everything I needed to purchase has arrived, and I got a slab of oak, for a second build. Bad news: In my efforts to strip the bark, and do a live edge epoxy pour, which was all the rage a few years ago, my chisel slipped and cut into my right thumb. This act of carelessness required seven stitches, and ended my dream of a live edge epoxy pour (basically, a canyon river in a piece of wood). The oak will be used, but in the traditional manner.
I cleaned some of the blood off of the floor. But not my shoes.
I’ve made relatively little progress, save for finishing the pickup rings and the toggle cap. The finish will be Watco Danish Oil. I’m letting the second coat dry right now. I did the work outside, and there was adequate air circulation.

Well, this obviously isn’t the purpleheart guitar, but it is a build update. The 6-string J-style poplar-walnut-poplar. Aguilar pups, Kahler trem, and all of the glaring failures of the first-time builder. Everything that could be wrong with it, clearly is:

I am definitely painting it. White, with argyle of two specific colors - Sharpie lime green paint pen, and Sharpie purple paint pen - and I will award absolutely no points to the person who correctly guesses their significance.
Oh, and my hand is much better.

Glad to hear your hand is healing up. Terrible time to be hitting the ER / urgent care
....on to the build
You must have an astounding lack of OCD. I wish I could ignore centerlines and symmetry as well as you do. (sorry for the backhanded compliment... I just can't seem to help being an asshole these days )
Interesting combination of wood - why not all poplar if you're just going to paint it? Seems like an awful waste of good walnut.
Are you doing this totally by hand? Curious what machines you're using to square and shape your materials.
Good luck, man

Re: Okay, Now It’s Going Down For Real
Since I knew that I was going to fail in some way, I decided to push further into this project. A few noise complaints later (my landlords are only really concerned with property destruction and after-hours work, neither of which I have done), and I’m in the shaping process. Armed with a Shinto rasp, a flat Microplane, and some files, I have made considerable progress, and will have some semblance of the shape I want by month’s end.
The wood was available, which is why I did what I did. This isn’t a Carl Thompson, folks; the next time I build one, I hope not to repeat the same mistakes.
