Strat build.

Post by exafro »

Been kicking around the idea of building a guitar for quite a while now. Doing a simple super strat style build. Alder body, maple neck, possibly a cocobolo board. Schaller 475, Sperzel locking tuners and a Duncan JB with ceramic magnet. Want to do a sunburst, but might have to go with a solid color because the alder has an inclusion or two. I'm only able to work on this one day a week(no room at my apartment, so I'm using my parents yard,) so it's gonna be quite slow going. Anyway started work on the template today.

Rough cut 1/2" birch ply with a jigsaw and then did a bit of rough shaping with a Shinto rasp.

Started finalizing the shape on a spindle sander. It's not perfect yet, but its pretty close. I won't be moving forward until these are as close to perfect as I can make them. Any screw up here will be transferred to the body wood after routing and it's much easier to get this right now than to fix a mistake later on.

Working with wood for the template is hard. Unless you have a belt & spindle sander. But looking at your result seems good. Hopefully there aren't any nicks so that the router bearing would run smooth.
