80s Peavey Heritage VTX MOD

Post by PlayThatFunkyMusic »

I was wondering if there is a way to change a SS pre -> tube power amp into a SS amp, without the tubes.
Maybe a ridiculous question, but I just had to ask. :noob:

:D

Welcome! This is a safe place to be a noob. Short and correct answer is to just buy a tube amp.

Welcome to the fold brother.
This is the best guitar/amp forum on the interwebznet!!!

If you are asking if it is possible to replace tubes with transistors, the answer is, yes. Several years ago, my Sunn Sentura II developed a cracked tube socket. I brought it to a tech who replaced it with a transistor... without my permission! So, if you know what you are doing, you can convert tubes to transistors and I'm sure you can convert transistors to tubes but, the latter would be more labor intensive.

Just buy a new amp and call it a day.

Edit: can't remember which tube was replaced by a transistor.

It is possible, but here's the catch. Tube and SS use a different approaches to get power to a load. Tubes use lots of voltage e.g. 300V and a little amperage through an output transformer to generate the load the speaker will like. SS uses low voltage e.g. 50V, high amperage directly to the load. Are you willing to pay what it will cost to change the design of the amp?
