Saw Meshuggah for the first time

Post by JimmyPaeg »

I'm not a religious person by any means, but it was a friggen spiritual experience

Jens had lost his voice and was unable to sing for the last couple of weeks so they had been playing instrumental sets with a cardboard cutout of him.

Fortunately he was feeling well enough to be able to perform, and even though his voice got a bit quieter as the show went on, I think the added rasp made up for it. In any case, he growled his guts out.

Listening to them on a record is awesome, but live the amount of power that's behind those low notes is incredible. You don't hear them, you feel them in your chest.

They're tight as fuck too. Literally not a single bad note. They have a great light show. I think they trigger the lights with Thomas' kick drum triggers so it's totally in synch.

Its unbelievable the way they craft a sound that is simultaneously very primitive and yet so machinelike and selfconsciously modern.

I dig me some meshuggah...Rhythmically those guys are geniuses...Most of their songs would make fantastic right hand technique exercises.

I can only listen to a song or two of their albums at a time anymore though :(

I saw them on the Clash of the Titans tour with Alice in Chain, Anthrax, and Megadeth. Slayer blew everyone else away. Megadeth was on the Rust in Peace tour and were awesome but Slayer was more fun.

I caught them earlier this year in Chicago. They were pretty amazing live. Its mindcrushing the stuff they do for a WHOLE FREAKING SET not just a couple of songs.

I'm super glad I got to see them, but once was enough unless the bill is really good. I just get overwhelmed after a certain point.

Did Decapitated suck for your show too? When I saw them in Chicago I thought Decapitated was pretty bad. Granted, I'd recently caught a couple awesome death metal shows and seeing death metal at the HOB isn't an ideal setting, but it wasn't very inspiring.

For me it's Destroy Erase Improve

Chaosphere was great too - after that everything got too samey, IMO

On a related note, now that I've seen Animals as Leaders who were the opener, I can well and truly say: MEH!!

Sure, Tosin can play, but the songs have absolutely no sense of going anywhere. I was pretty bored.

Destroy Erase Improve is my favorite. It doesn't get as fatiguing as the other albums. AND it has Future Breed Machine, quite likely the best metal song ever written.
