As some of you know from reading my earlier thread, I tracked down a Peavey VTM 60 from a guy here in Canada at a nice price. He was working a lot last week and wasn't able to pick it up from his jam space until today.
I just got this PM from him...
Hey Jason. We (mainly I) have a problem. I went to the jam spot to get the VTM and the back was off and the tubes were on the floor. I guess the guitar player from the other band was using it through his cab and it stopped working. I looked at his cab and it's 4 ohms but the dip shit plugged it into the 16 ohm tap. I popped in the tubes and it turns on but no sound. I also plugged in the 6L6's from my Budda and no change. I can take it to a local tech here and see what he says or i can refund you the $$ in full. Please let me know what you think. Sorry man, i should have went to get it sooner.
I told him to go ahead and bring it to a tech. I'm hoping it's just a screen resistor and not a transformer.
For some reason I picture some crabcore douchebag playing shit through it and being all like "WTF?" when it stopped working.

On a related note -- any of you guys leave your equipment at a place where other people can access it? I may not have the best gear in the world, but there's no way I would leave it somewhere that's not my house.

I've never been in a band, so no, but I don't know if I could ever leave my gear at a shared rehearsal space. I'm weird about people using my stuff without permission though. Drives me nuts.

Nope. Never have and never will.
I don't even bring my amps to any band practice. I bring a smaller board with just the basics and use the provided amps. Most often a Roland JC of some sort.

Yeah -- he seems like a straight shooter. Says he's going to take it to Long and McQuade (Canada's version of Guitar Center) tomorrow to have it diagnosed. I told him to keep his chin up. I've built several amps and know that while output transformers can catastrophically blow, it's usually something else that's gone south.

Mojo, mang. Here's hoping it's an easy fix and dude will take care of it!

My band rents a practice room that we have to ourselves, so I guess if someone else in the band decided to, they could use my gear when I wasn't there. Which is fair enough, because over Christmas I was wailing away on my drummer's kit. Other than that, no. Even at gigs, I'd have to know you or have been asked in advance if you wanted to use something of mine.

of course, this being a peavey amp, the HT fuse may be inside the chassis with the dangerous bits.
Just checked the schematic and that's where it is.
I suggested he check the main fuse on the back before he brings it to the tech.
I also thanked him for being so honest -- I'm sure there are a few people out there who would have shipped it and claimed it was damaged during shipping. I've read plenty of horror stories at HC and TGP about that scenario.

Yeah. At least dude was honest. Hopefully it's only a minor problem, and the both of you come out all right on the deal..you get a good working amp, and him not having a ton of $$$ repairing it, BC of some n00bs mistake.

Thats awesome of you. Again, hope it all works out.
I thought I smoked my Metroamp Supuerbass awhile back. Ended up just being tubes & SG resistors (and the wiring that ran between them burnt). Wasnt too bad. A $10 repair (not counting tubes). $10.00 worth of resistors, and some wire from the junk box. Ended up trading a pedal to ~Abstract~ for some =C= 6550's , & got her going again.
It's always nice when something ends up being an easy fix, and you end up with something a little better than what you had. Had I not killed the power tubes in it, I wouldnt have ended up with a better set than what it had.

I have 2 broes I'll leave stuff with. They take care of my stuff, like I do theirs. If something were to happen to my stuff, they'd replace it or pay me, and vice versa.
Plust the fact, that If I ever got in a pinch, and had to sell EVERY piece of gear I have, I know they'd let me use ANYTHING they have, ANY time I'd need it.

Yeah, my Deliverance halfstack, pedalboard, drumset, and several other cabs of mine stay at my bassist/best buddy's house, where we rehearse.

6 days a week, unfortunately. expensive stuff too. but all the people there are cool and are musicians. they have all received my training course in impedance and tube handling, etc. and know that if anything ANYTHING were to happen, there would be asswhooping followed by reimbursements.
