A really great interview with a professional mixer.

I've been keeping up with Recordingrevolution.com for a while now. The host tends to have a lot of simple ideas for improving mixes and is pretty decent at conveying them. But this video I just caught is one of the highlights of the entire series for me. It's an interview with Joe Carrel, a professional mixer that does most of his mixing in the box.

The topics they cover are fascinating, and it's really great that while they start with some minor discussion of plugins, in the end they really reinforce that it's not about how many or how fancy your tools are, it's that you know how to use them so you can let go of the technical side of things and concentrate on bring the emotion of the tracks out.

He spends a lot of time talking about country music, but there's still some solid ideas that could work for about any type of music you might mix.

Thought maybe some of you recording/mixing dudes around here would appreciate this. It's long and takes a bit to get rolling, but the info covered is really thought provoking.

Yeah, the low volume thing was one of those deals I'm aware of, but sometimes find myself forgetting to do. It's so easy to push the volume to see if that little something is gonna show up properly when it's loud, but really it should show up properly when it isn't loud.

I need to do a better job at automating/riding faders. I do a bit on the bass tracks, but rarely think about it for other things.

Theres really nothing in the video I haven't heard from tons of other sources. Make templates, mix at low volumes, ride faders.

Can't see riding faders very useful for metal. Slight automation maybe but you can get yourself into trouble playing with faders mid mix.

True, but at least in my case it is helpful to be reminded how important some of these things are.
