1985-1990: Van Halen vs David Lee Roth

In my opinion there is virtually no comparison. David shined and soared once he left Van Halen for those 5 years at least 3 of them and Van Halen made some rubbish.

They both went downhill, fast. Eat 'Em and Smile and 5150 were each a major step down from 1984, and then it was straight into the abyss for both.

I dunno man, I will always have a soft spot for 5150. OU812 has its moments as well.

I have a soft spot for 5150 too. It and Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms were the first two albums I bought of my own volition. Age 12, 7th grade. I loved the hell out of 5150. I can still listen to it and dig it.

But in hindsight, Hagar disease was setting in already: the good-time party songs (e.g. "Good Enough") sound forced to me, and the loathsome earnest/serious Hagar songs (e.g. "Dreams," "Best of Both Worlds," about five others) are out in full force. And the keyboards are even more prominent than on 1984.

I agree. Not all of the songs have aged very well and the keyboards are a tad overdone at times.

I like some Van Halen and Van Hagar songs but in general, on the whole, meh. That might border on blasphemy but aside from killer guitar tone and riffs and some occasional cool rock braggadocios coming by way of Dave there really wasn't much to them as a band. Sorry dudes.

This, though here and there, post 5150; Van Hagar put out a good song or three. Hagar had a great voice for the time but his lyrics have always sucked IMO.

All that being said, all 3 VanHalens are beasts on their respective instruments. I watched some rehearsal footage from the last tour and Wolfgang's (Wolfie lol wtf-ever) bass playing and tone was absolutely fucking monstrous

Van Hagar was pretty :sick:

overall, but I will admit the title track and "Get Up" from 5150 have some great riffs. My real hang-ups with the Hagar years are the really bad lyrics on certain songs ("Amsterdam" anyone?) and the ballads. The Van Hagar ballads are just as cringe-worthy as any Journey song.

Love the DLR albums with Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette. Those two albums are like Van Halen on crack. Also, "Hina" and the title track from Skyscraper really foreshadow what Vai's solo music came to be. Very beautiful, exotic songwriting on those two jams.
