So with this damn quarantine I've damn near burned through the entirety of my Scotch collection.
Just had the first anniversary with my wife. Since there were no bars/restraunts open to go celebrate we just did some stuff at home. This included making lady drinks like pina coladas, strawberry daiquiris, and the ultimate symbol of white trash on vacation the Miami Vice. The reason for this is our wedding was in the carribean and we lived on these things for a week with our family and friends.

Turns out I actually am not bad at making these drinks from scratch after reading a few online recipes. Definitely helps to have real fruit and things like that on hand. Overall we're gonna keep drinking these every once and awhile until we've burned through all the rum and what not. Its actually a nice change of pace from my usual rounds of scotch, IPAs, or white claws.

Prohibition STATE?!?!?!
where is that?

or do you just mean you can't have it shipped to you?

Not shipped, which is still part of prohibition, believe it or not. Wasn't that long ago you couldn't buy alcohol anywhere here after a certain time in the evening until a certain time the next afternoon.

The vast majority of states don't have those laws anymore.

PA is close to the same way - only state owned liquor stores - which is not as bad as you think - as it make the State of PA one of the largest purchasers of liquor in the country.
Our prices for top shelf stuff are incredibly better than NY for instance - where they charge whatever they can get away with.

I know a few years ago you couldn't ship to PA either, not sure if that has changed.

What's funny to me in SD is that they've made an exception for wines above a certain price point because the ritzy fuckers wanted to be able to import from wherever they wanted, but left us poor plebes to go fuck ourselves away. We want something unattainable in state? Drive or fly to buy it. Sucks to be poor, losers.

I can order spirits online but, wine can't be shipped into NY State.
I tried to order some sake from a California importer and they refused to ship.
Turns out, NY State has protectionism laws in place to protect NY wine makers!!! That's big gubment interfering with my life!!!!

noice..... I love the 10 year old, been wanting to give this a try, I hear it has a little more kick than the 10 year old...

if you like peaty Scotches, next time you're in the liquor store see if they have Compass Box Peat Monster..... the name makes it sound like it's going to rip your head off but it's on the same level as Arbeg 10 IMO but with a little more flavor... I love the stuff

I love the taste of peaty creosote!!! :rawk:
Compass Box sells online via thewhiskeyexchange.com.
Peat Monster is US$49 which is OK but, shipping is US$70!!!
I'll have to check the local liquor stores... hopefully, they can order it for me because, I MUST try some!!!

Maybe some Kentucky Mules. I haven’t tried the pear monster. I’ve been tempted, but the price scared me a little. I know I like ardbeg and Laphroig, and can get those for a bit cheaper

This is very tasty not overly fruity tasting despite the ingredients and a great summer brew. Someone suggested lobster rolls to go with summer fruit ales and yeah that would be a really fucking good match.

Woah. Our governor declared, by state executive order, liquor stores to be an essential service. I guess I took for granted that every state would do that :(

Pretty sure PA was the only one where they closed (only state stores exist here). Luckily the was a local distillery that you could buy from.

Had to dig this back up. Tuesday was national coffee day so I went all in on creating a cocktail from scratch.

Started with cold brew coffee I made the previous day. Two heaped tablespoons of coffee grounds in a 16oz mason jar, fill with cool water, cap, shake, toss it in the fridge for eight to twelve hours. Shake again, then pour through a filter. I use a funnel lined with a standard coffee filter and it works fine. Little slow, but you can dump it in and just let it sit for a few minutes and go do something else.

So, once filtered you toss one cup of that into a saucepan with two cups sugar and two tablespoons cocoa powder. Whisk and heat until right at the edge of bubbling. Too hot scalds the cocoa. Let it bubble just a bit until it thickens. Then put it in an airproof container and stick it in the fridge with the leftover coffee.

Cocktail time!
1 part the syrup you made (technically, that's mocha syrup)
1 part whiskey (or more, you decide) I used old grandad 114 'cause I like super hot whiskey in cocktails.
2 parts the cold brew coffee you had leftover
Ice.

Shake, shake, shake for thirty seconds, then straight over fresh ice.

My wife, who can't even smell whiskey without feeling icky, took a sip and declared victory. It's not a light drink, and you're not gonna slam twelve of them, but for an after-dinner dessert drink it hits the spot.
