George Lynch and Dokken

Post by Pepi »

Is it just me or does George have a kickass sound for rhythm but his lead playing is like a million hornets swarming. Never really listened to Dokken before and I really like some of their stuff but his lead playing kills my ears

Depends on the record. For Dokken, Under Lock and Key is my favorite. His tone for the Lynch Mob record is great too, as is for his recent projects like KXM.

I may be wrong but I think he was using solid state Randalls for Tooth and Nail.

I always remember Dokken as the band that was self-destructing in front of our eyes at the Monsters of Rock show back in '88. After Metallica opened for them

I saw this tour in FL!!
Yeah Dokken was the weakest link - and I think this tour included Kingdom Come as the opener!

Man I love Lynch's "500 take, cobbled together" solo's! LOL! Many are quite incoherent but I dig them. He's definitely a unique player. It always surprises me how much he can't pull them off live. Even from vids way back from they heyday.

He also uses way less gain than you'd expect which doesn't help him...

I remember this guy from the end of the HCAF days. Everybody was like "wow grandpa rocks" until someone discovered he was in his early 50's and just looks like shit. George Lynch is actually older than him

He's a good player though.

George Lynch may have the most over-hyped tone of all time.

The guitar sound on Wicked Sensation is good at times, but pretty much everything else sounds average compared to his peers.

I absolutely jammed to the "Hair" bands back in the day. I liked more Dokken songs, but I always thought Warren DeMartini's work was more interesting...

Dokken had a lot of great songs and some mainstream success.

Lynch did a great job coming up with catchy and memorable guitar parts to play over what was essentially Don's singer songwriter love songs.

He really raised the profile of electric guitar for a while. I mean they were on the radio. I'm not a Lynch fan...but credit where it's due. I think in the day he was like a little more modern version of evh.

This is my point ... That rhythm sound is killer but when he goes into a lead with the same settings it toasts my ears :nlisten:

Tooth and Nail I think was done with Randall RG's and he was playing a couple Aria guitars, I think at that time too. I know both Dokken and Def L. were using Randalls and DL also was into the GK's.
