L.A. can mean L.A. city and/or L.A. county. The county is huge and covers a lot of land (though not as big as San Bernardino or Inyo county). Lancaster is technically "L.A." as it is in L.A. county. I live in the valley-half of L.A. city and don't consider myself as living in L.A. Therefore, there is an element of subjective perception. Now within L.A. city, there's Los Angeles as in the 213 area code. What's that called if it's not L.A. city? A city within a city? I guess it's just called Downtown L.A.
