Help me revamp my Studio gear

Post by crankyrayhanky »

I already snagged a Clarett 8pre (incoming)
I'm looking at a new CPU Dell

Should I get the Windows 10 PRO or is 10 Home good enough? $60 difference
I intend on using this cpu only for Pro Tools 2018 & Vegas 15 (I have anpth4r computer for emails & misc jobs)

Thanks!

also, kind of on the fence on the primary hard drive: is 512GB SSD plenty for the operating system, PT, Vegas plugins, etc?
Actual sessions would be on a secondary drive (2TB).
I think that should be plenty, even with Superior Drums, and Miroslav Orchestra instruments....For reference, my current computer has 150GB and is running out. I guess if the 512 ever ran out I could keep the plugins there and move those vast libraries to another drive?

Yeah that should be fine. I have a USB 3tb hard drive with all my Superior libraries on it and I even track to it in logic Pro. Congrats on the Clarett 8pre. LOVE mine. I have a 512 SSD as well and not issues. I even have the Adobe Creative Suite on there.

cool, thanks!
CPU ordered!

I'm ready to have my head blown. I've been working on a cpu that is almost 10 years old. It was great at that time, but...yeah, this should rock!
New band demo will happen asap

Should be good Ray; I already mentioned the in another thread recently, but I grabbed a Dell awhile back. i7, 512 SSD, 1TB HD, 16GB RAM and I can bomb on anything; 45-50 tracks of heavy orchestral stuff in Kontakt plus plugins and no issues. I don’t DO that of course, but I wanted to see if I could.

I'd look at Windows 10 home would be fine, i7 16g ram, 1tb hard drive, you'll be golden.

I have access to lots of *cough* plugins if you want to try before you buy.
Some guys like a challenge. Not me.

Here's the specs I settled on:
8th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 6-Core Processor (12M Cache, up to 4.6 GHz)
Windows 10 Home 64bit English
32GB Quad Channel DDR4 at 2666MHz (4x8GB)
XPS 8930, Special Edition Chassis (460W)
512GB M.2 PCIe x4 SSD + 2TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 Graphics Memory

I do want some plugins! I'm going to use PT 2018 so that may be limiting
I had some really cool ones through WAVES and a few others, but last year I updated my system and it made them obsolete- it wanted me to upgrade from Windows 7

So I still own some stuff, but I'm looking at this guy selling a Waves Mercury Bundle for cheap cheap
If this works it is a ridiculous price:

Send me a pm if you want some plugins, and fyi, if you're not opposed to cracks, I'll be happy to help.

It was around 1700

I just spent the last week updating and getting things set. On the - side, my older Scarlett rev1 will not work as additional inputs to the Clarett. Bummer. Maybe I'll use it for 2 additional tracks through spdif before selling it off.

On the + side, I am stacked with plugs and horsepower! I'll be ready to track drums soon...
