THEN I'm going to be looking to start a new amp project...Probably the SLO finally, and for some reason I really want to clone a fender deluxe circuit...A couple options, will be sourcing transformers first as that's always the major expense...

One thing I'm going to try is find a CHEAP jet city 100, and replace the boards with SLO Clone boards...I want to see if I can make that work...Use the iron and chasses from the jet city, because the O'Netics iron is like 500 bucks, so if i could find a 100 for 300, that would pretty slick.

Otherwise I'll just do it from scratch SLOClone is a cool place man! Lots of smart guys there.

I am about to build a pedal myself. Its basically going to be a Devi Ever soda-miser with some mods.

I have stopped modding my amp for the moment but I am sure that will change.

That is a great idea. The iron is the most expensive part for sure. I am not convinced of the difference that everyone makes out of the iron personally.

A guy over on the sloclone forum did a an A/B with the onetics set against the inMADout set and there really wasn't much in it and the inMADout stuff runs at a fraction of the price. I have an inMADout SLO OT in the mail now to replace the blown OT in my AOR. I know it seems stupid putting a real high spec OT in an AOR but I fucking love that amp for what I do and while my superbass is great it lacks the sheers balls of the AOR.

I guess if you did want to upgrade the tranys (and the JC ones aren't bad) then you have a few good options. Edcor do great full range OTs cheap and they have an ultralinear screen feed too so that can be put on a switch. Triode electronics sell a full range high gain project OT for about $130 too with a fair few options and that was developed by the guys over on sloclone.

Thanks for the info dude. I know there are differences in transformers...a lot of it has to do with feel I'm convinved. That said, for the cost of a chassis, headshell and transformer set, you're well over the 300 dollar mark...I figure start off that way, replace the pots, add a few switches for options, and it should be fun in the process...You see Jet City on the outside, but on the inside it's all "BAM BITCHES!"...Ok, not really, but I think it sounds fun, so I'm gonna give it a shot.

You certainly learn from your mistakes. I've pretty much always worked with unpunched chassis and not thinking about hole placement can really bite you on the ass!

I really need to crack on with my own builds. I've been far too lazy. I have a PI board that needs populating, maybe I'll do that later today and then I'll post up some pictures.

I've found transformers to be quite transparent to the sound as well. What I noticed however was how they spec out the primary/secondary ratio. From company to company you can end up with a different ratio or reflected load onto the speaker. So in the end - yes - there is a difference in tone, but not because TXFR A is better than TXFR B, but rather because TXFR A has a lower reflected load so there is more presence in the sound - which by comparison "sounds better".

Want a donor amp? I know you and I loosely discussed working on mods on mine a while ago but never really got into it.

One big difference between Jet City amps and Soldanos/clones, is back of the chassis. Jet City has dedicated speaker outs for each ohm, and on Soldanos (and the clones), its a selector knob. Just something to think about . . .

Also you can likely get the clone chassis for $200. I was actually thinking about buying a lot from C3 Amps until I got sidetracked with this whole Earhart thing. Rob from C3 is a cool guy - he's from our area, too.

I think most Transformers show differences in either very low gain settings or very high gain settings more. The Mercury stuff in low gain settings can sound very stiff and brittle, but holds up very well under very high gain. I personally don't think the difference is worth the extra coin, though. In the past, I had two different Splawn Quickrods. One was a very early model when Scott used the Mercury X-formers. The other was just before he added the fourth tube for the clean channel, which had the Heyboers. Quite honestly, the difference wasn't all that apparent. Both amps sounded very similar. So, under MOST conditions, I will agree that a lot of Transformers sounds the same.

You can change the JCA amps to be like the SLO with very little effort. Besides the slight differences in the preamp, you just need to change the filtering in the power supply. THAT might be the tricky part. Also, a few of the dudes in the JCA camp were talking about wanting to try different power tubes. The stock iron isn't stout enough to withstand the current demands of say, EL34s or KT88s. So, I contacted Heyboer to ask what a set of trannies would cost, wound to the stock JCA voltages, but with highger current ratings, and the price is pretty damn good. For about $250, you can get a PT, OT and Choke for a 50w and I think it was $260 for a set for the 100w. So, you could get the JCA, make some small changes and have a really cool platform to work with. I'm still trying to buy one for myself to get to tinkering. I built two SLO Clones in the past, one with Weber trannies and one with Heyboers. The Heyboers are really good. You DIY guys may want to contact them, too.

This. I've had a slo clone pcb set for like 3/4 years just never had the cash or time to build the damn thing yet.
I've actually been wanting to build a souped up, thrash jcm 800 with some new sensor iron.
