POLICE DISTORTION - BOSS OS-2 MOD(DIY) - with YouTube sample

Post by Kniferius »

Hey Girls and Guys,
I am new on this Forum. I am looking for people that would like to help me to improve my projects giving me some comments, tips and tricks. I love building stompboxes and now I would like to show you something (maybe) interesting.
I am counting on interesting tips and comments in this Thread!!
I would like to present you one of my DIY mods of effect pedals. This time it came to totally broken Boss OS-2 which got a second life and turned into POLICE DISTORTION.

Image

Why POLICE DISTORTION???

- because I have painted it darkblue (like old European Police Cars)
- because it has blue and red light on the top of it (which are glowing whenewer you play)
- because if it stops you - It really stops you for days.

Here are some photos:
ImageImage

I also need to say that it has not only lightning LED DIODES but also a 1cm hill which is glowing as well.
Why?? Because for this modification it was neccessary to make an additional layer of PCB! (Double layered electronic).
Which I made "of course" by myself (with a small help from my colleagues)

Image

The hill looks like that and it glows whenever the Stompbox is ON, so that you can find it in any circumstances in darkness or at the rehersals.
The hill is done from glass fibre reinforced polymer (the only material I had in this time).
Image

As you can see it is a bit higher than real BOSS Stompbox (but it has also much bigger Transistor 2n2219 and more diodes).

Here some other photos of this Stompbox:

If you are more interested about how it sounds, please, visit this ling to my First YouTube Video:

I am always happy to receive some tips, tricks, or comments, so that I can do next film better.

If you need an additional information about this modification (schematic, additional samples, simulations) just write me a message on my facebook fanpage.
You can also ask about modification of other pedals, guitar wiring, stombox building, etc. I am always ready to answer an interesting question!
Maybe You can - like always - learn me how to build your own Pedal and help me with my problems… - than let’s do this together!!!
I will be glad to receive some feedback from You.

Hope You will Enjoy It.

thanks,
Peter

Dude, that is some slick work!! Love the way you added that plexi on the bottom; very clever.

As for the sound of the pedal in your vid, I think it sounds a bit thin - certainly thinner that what I'd normally use myself. What sort of amp is that you're playing through? I'd like to hear the pedal gain mixed in with the amp's distortion.

Also, I freaking love your guitar!!

By the way, your link was broken. Here ya go:

Thank You DEVIN VERY VERY Much.

Thin... i knew IT.
This Pedal had a really thick distortion - It was so thick that I started to avoid this Low Bottom Sound - That why I add so many attenuators.
By doing the video I had in my head that I need to do something with this Thickness because this people would not like.
But taking your words in consideration - next time I will be not as much afraid about doing something really different from stock products (The Boss OS-2 is a really thin distortion).
Thank You for this suggestion!!
I just need to have more self confidency in this what I am doing.

By the whay - take a look on my Facebook for other distortion I am doing (completely out of CARBON FIBRE).
How do you like this IDEA??!!

Regards,
Peter

PS:
The AMP is custom made for me (from AMP DOCTOR PL) - Its is a 50W 3 Channel AMP with 22 Tubes inside plus: Solo, string reverb, Power Scaling, HeadPhones out, parallel/series loop and many others.
With Cabinet It was only 1200 Euro - to tell you the truth :D - So the guy gived me something for nothing.

Guitar is Mayones Guitars and Basses Regius Pro.

I will do at some point review of them both in my Youtube.

I agree with Devin. Sounds very thin and frail... as if you were playing through single coils and a much smaller amp. I'd try to revoice it a bit to make it sound thicker and most importantly, fuller. You don't have to add a lot of low-end to it, try to add some more lower midrange to that tone. I think you have a great idea and your work is very clean and professional but in terms of tone, it needs to improve a bit.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

Sure!! At some point I will repeat video.

Thank you for your reply,

This stomp box (BOSS OS-2) had a really thin sound and I was trying to rebuilt it at some point.
I am sure this is a problem of my recording adjustements.
For sure it needs relevant improvement but...
I will not change this film and this stompbox in the nearest future due to full head of new Ideas :D
For example....
Fully CARBONFIBRE Overdrive (3 steps - one silicon transistor and two germanium transistors).

Image

I am freaking out and cannot wait to do this one :)

Regards,
Peter

PS:
I am really glad that someone has lost his time to watch the film and let me a comment.
I have posted this on many forums and I observe now which forums are active and show some commitment.
Pretty sure I will stay and post more on this forum!!!

Thanks Guys!!

Great!

Stick around and you'll get some good feedback.
Just be ready, when someone gets drunk or obstinate, and has a smartass comment about one of your builds or your English, just let it roll off your back and you will fit in just fine.

I enjoyed the video. The music is mysterious in a good way. Keep doing what you are doing. The sound will improve with experience. For what it's worth, it sounds pretty good. Almost fuzz like.

Does the stock pedal use an op amp chip or transistors?

I know you mentioned something about adding transistors.

I'm interested in watching your progress. I hope you stick around.
