May seem pointless, but it gives pretty good pointers on how to change a terrible drum sound into something usable.

A buddy of mine used a kick pedal and a cardboard box to record a kick drum.... sounded great!

That was actually very interesting. A lot of that can be applied to real snare and kick processing.
Now, I want the Kramer Saturator and the Soft Clip. Damn, I need more money!!!

People always go on and on about preamps and mics with a kick...

I've never NOT been able to get a decent kick sound. One of the easiest things to mix/manage if you're good with eq/compression/saturation.

Snare on the other hand...

There's tons of free ones that'll work the same. :)

Like GVST GClip, Softube Saturation Knob, Variety of Sound NastyVCS and FerricTDS etc etc.

But if you want a commercial saturation plugin I really recommend FabFilter Saturn. That plugin and what you can do with it is just mindboggling.
