Opinions on the Gary Moore BFG Les Paul?

Post by sloppy fingers »

I tried one that I liked, how are they in comparison to "normal" Les Paul's? Right now I'm using a Yamaha AES 620 for Les Paul flavored stuff and I wonder how much better a BFG might be. My only issues with the AES 620 are that it's neck heavy which is pretty annoying and the pots are kinda crappy. Other than those 2 things it's pretty awesome. It has a JB bridge pickup.

The BFG is a very cool guitar. It is not everyones mug of coffee. I have liked the 2 or 3 I have played enough that if the opportunity and cash stars align I would buy one. Test driving is the only way for you to know if it is for you or a waste of money.

hated it myself. you want a gary LP then get a 59 reissue or if you are really rich there is a reissue of his famous peter green lp.

I once played one against the Gary Rossington VOS or what it was called. Liked the Rossington more, ended up buying neither of them.

I love my BFG (which is not the Gary Moore, but AFAIK the same specs, except for the color). The BFG has a lot of haters. I think many people think Gibson was slumming when they came up with it, like it's a crackhead's Les Paul (in fact, I've noticed some who are reluctant to see it as part of the LP lineage, like it's a blasphemy). I see it sort of like a muscle car that's been stripped down for street racing, sporting primer instead of paint. In many ways, it's the antithesis of a Custom. That's part of why I like it.

What is that other switch, where the volume and tone controls are, for?

IIRC that is the pickup toggle switch and the one on the upper bout is a kill switch

This is correct.

The pickup (in mine and the Gary Moore) is a Burstbucker 3, which is ideal for gainy hard rock and old school metal. I play a lot of that, myself. The Gibson website (http://store.gibson.com/burstbucker-type-3/) says it's rated at 8.4k, which is lower than I expected. I thought it was more like 10k, because to me it sounds slightly hotter than a PAF. I think it's a great pickup. It has good dynamic range. It won't get near modern metal, but it can do stoner/doom with no problem.

Might want to check how your P-90 is seated. It looks crooked. After I received mine, I fiddled with the pickup height and found out one of the screws had come out, so the thing was attached with one screw only, and the spring was completely off (thankfully, it was stuck underneath the pickup plate). Simple fix, but a little annoying. I thought I'd mention it just in case.

I notice you replaced the bridge pickup with a Duncan. What is it, and how do you like it?

There have been quite a few of these on eBay lately, around $800 - $900.

When I got the guitar the previous owner had swapped the original pickup for a JB. I really like JBs in Les Pauls, haven't had as much luck with them in other guitars, usually hit or miss.

I'm not sure that the guitar is going to wind up being a keeper for me, I much prefer my Edwards and would like to get another I think.
