Anyone own/use the Dean Markley Overlord?

Post by Devin »

I'm bored at work and ran across one of these for $50, so I bought it

I've seen some pretty mixed reviews, with some people saying it's bast evar and others saying it's shit. Hopefully I can find some use for it, but if not, it was cheap enough

It's supposed to be a clone/variant of the BK Butler Real Tube, I think.

It looks awesome anyway!

So it has a 12AX7 in it huh? How does one "tune" a preamp tube?

I found a handful of various old 12a*7 tubes in an ancient wurlitzer juke box a while back, so ill be able to see if it even makes any difference whats in there.

I've always wanted to try one of those, mainly because it says Overlord on it. I bet it would be fun to push a JCM800 with that.

If you decide that you like tube OD's, I got an Ibanez TK999US (made by tube works. not the current offering) I'm wanting to sell.

I had this pedal in 1988 IIRC

It does sound good. $50 is a killer deal for it.

It looks like it uses a Tubeworks housing too. Do you suppose it was commissioned?

I have one of these, it sounds great!

I have tried different tubes in it, like 12AT7 and 12AU7, but I liked the 12AX7 in it the best.

I will offer a flip side to Chops Malone

I think they are shit.

1.) Really needs a 12AU7 to not sound like bees in a jar. This has more to do with the 12AU7 handling the extremely low voltage better than the 12AX7 better than their respective gain factors.

2.) They can't achieve unity gain unless completely maxed, which means most settings result in a volume drop.

3.) Horrible buffer, sucks the life, picking dynamics and high-end right out of the signal chain when off. Needs to placed in a true bypass loop.

4.) The internal transformer adds hum.

Is was made by Butler/Tube Works for Dean Markley, it was supposed to be higher gain "metal" variant of the Real Tube.

But for $50, it can't hurt. I think mine was $35 and I sold it for maybe twice that.

If I were to rank them I would say Tube Driver>Blue Tube>Real Tube>Overlord, but I am not a fan of Butler's starved plate designs at all, I believe a simple Tube Screamer is more natural sounding, so YMMV. The tube is only there for clipping, amplification is handled by a good ole 4558 op-amp and the the tubes, which are only seeing a miniscule ~1.5V on the plates, clip the signal.

Cool deal; do you know if there are any worthwhile mods out there for these things?

If I end up hating it, it might be fun to try tweaking it and see if it can be improved somehow

Probably, but I never really research them. Most people just swap tubes out.

The enclosure is really cool in a '80's metal/aggressive teenage boy way, so you can always throw something else in there.
