I would grab one , no pres yet , and see if it works ok , good latency and what not . I bet and how funny is this is that you may be able to use your current "ok" pres into the Aphex for further testing . You can always send it back.
They are discontinuing the cool, interesting stuff, and just focusing on their bread and butter exciters and such.
fretless wrote:do you mean using a different pre , I would guess it's worth a try but have not idea how it will work . Going back to high end converters , get a Lynx or RME pci card , Lynx has a few with high end converters built in if you only need a couple inputs . If you need say 6 or 8 get their pci16 . You can then connect into a mixing desk or preamps like a lunchbox and what not . To add , you don't need a million dollar setup to get great results , there are some talented folks on this forum that work magic with minimal setups .
Yeah, I really don't need to track multiple channels at the same time (at least not high high end). I just want one or two high quality preamps for vocals, acoustic, etc.,
I'm a big fan , I used a L22 for years and it was flawless until I moved up to their AES16 , I have 2 of those and could hook up to a 32 channel board if I had one or what works for me being an apt / project studio is I use just one with the Lavry I have 6 x i/o's more than enough for what I do , which is a very high level of fucking around.

This is it.
I just need the practice, knowledge, and experience. I have a couple bands set up to record in the basement, and I'm going to be recording, and mixing their shit for free...just for the experience. Hopefully I learn from mixing someone else's shit.
My USB 500 Rack just arrived. Holy shit these are well made. Im on Mac, so no drivers needed to be installed, just plugged in and had 6 ins/10 outs at 96k. I didn't need it as a primary interface, I use the MOTU 16A over Thunderbolt, but this is gonna rule for grabbing by the handle, walking out to the tracking room with a laptop, and plugging phones into the front to knock out some overdubs. I have a Classic API 312 to start, must resist the lure of the empty slots...

4 quality mic pres, could go ADAT into the Focusrite, and still hook up to 4 external MIC pres to it if I wanted. Can't imagine any time where I'd need to record more than 16 simultaneous tracks...

I did, lot of rave reviews. Most of the "negative" aren't all that negative, but just snootier people who don't like it as much as their $57,000 Neve shit.
Would be nice to have 4 quality pres with nice built in compression and expansion capabilities.
nakedzen wrote:The API A2D is the same price as the UA, but way higher quality preamps. In case you'd only need two channels.
That's an option too, but from what I can tell, you're stuck. At least with the UA, you get 4 preamps, AND the ability to use the AD Capabilities to add other Analog preamps.
