CLIP TIME ~ CHECK 'EM, YO!

Post by draelyc »

Okay, having recently acquired one of these:

Image

and one of these:

Image

it was time to run a couple quick clips. I've been trying to get the fx loop in this:

Image

to play nice with my pedals for a while, and the Morley was recommended to me as a device that would enable me to tame the ridiculously powerful signal coming out of the fx send so it wouldn't completely overdrive my time-based fx. And I think it works... pretty well. The amp loses a bit of sparkle and "feel" ... well, I think it does. Y'all listen to the clips and tell me.

I threw in a quick Plexi clip just for fun/comparison.

Everything was recorded just now, in the wee hours as my girls are sleeping, direct to the board using the Koch Dummybox and no other processing/eq'ing/etc.

Right, so clips:

First, the Bonneville with the loop completely hard-bypassed:

Bonneville, NO LOOP

Then, the B'ville with the loop engaged & running through the Morley. No fx on, just testing the tone difference when engaging the loop & the Morley device.

Bonnville w/ LOOP & MORLEY

And lastly, Plexi goodness (still running the Omnisonic volume knob in the loop to tame the overall level, so no power tube overdrive here ~ just preamp):

Plexi w/ temp master volume

Lemme know whatch'all think!

Thanks!

Any thoughts on the differences between the two B'ville clips?

I don't hear a difference in tone between the two clips.

To me all three clips sounded pretty damn similar, except the Plexi clip is louder :idk:

I think I prefer the Bonneville crunch but all 3 clips have the 'direct in to board' feel to em.

I did hear a bit of the sparkle being lost between the Bonneville clips, but to me it was in favor for the tone. I liked the second clip of the Bonneville the best.

thanks for the feedback, fellas! This Morley does seem to be doing the trick, and that's way cool, because the fx loop issue was the main reason I was gonna sell the Bonneville; now that I can use my time based fx in the loop with it, it's totally gigable. :thu:

This is very true. Both amps definitely lose something when not pushing real air with a real speaker. Hopefully, in a song mix the loss will be negligible...? :idk:

I wonder if that Morley is a clone of the Ebtech line level shifter? They look very similar and are the same price.

I've heard bad things about that Ebtech, though :hmm:

I've been using a Hum Eliminator for years and I don't notice anything bad about it.

No. I have the EbTech unit. It works on impedence instead of voltage and though it fixed my level problems, it killed the amp's tone. The Morley works much better for this application, imo.

That's awesome! I could use something like this - i'll probably end up going for the Pigtronix Keymaster, though :o

It's spensive, but the ability to have expression control over any pedal (or to crossfade between pedalboards even), is pretty sick

Interesting that the Bonneville clip ~ especially the one with the loop engaged ~ got more positive comments. Cool ... I've been digging the B'ville a lot, lately, so nice affirmation there. :) Thanks, y'all!

Thanks, brutha. I like the Plexi too, a lot ... I just wish (as blasphemous as it may be) that it had a tad more preamp gain on its own, y'know?

Thanks for taking time to check out the clips. :thu:
