id call him a solid player. the term "great" to me is reserved for guys like jimi or EVH.
I think EVH innovated a style, much like Hendrix, and I'll probably get smacked for this but I wouldn't call him great unless his transformation of electric guitar for an entire generation plus counts. Don't get me wrong, EVH was my inspiration in the early 80's and I thought he was a guitar god, but in retrospect he's not highly technical nor has he innovated anything since the early days. Again, he's special, but a "great" guitar player... dunno if I'd agree.
Flame suit is on.
I like Eddie's rhythm stuff more than his leads... the odd and tricky timings and accents, the riffs and voicings that don't make much sense out of context but fit the song perfectly, etc..
If we're speaking in relative terms, Razorblade Ray's tone is consistently better than his playing. May I never know how it feels to play worse than an 8-string into a karaoke machine sounds.
"If there was only a way that I couldn't even any less than I already can't then I'd gladly not, but I think I've entered some quantum paradox, dark matter levels of can't evening where the total absolute value of not evenness exceeds all ability to explain the can'ting." - MR RUBATO
Being something of a negativist, are we? Usually good tone comes from hours of trying out gear and settings, and truely great tone comes from good playing technique.
i should mention 3 doors down, when i saw them live a few months ago they had the best clean, rhythm and lead tones ive ever heard live. never did i ever think i would be saying that lol
