Rebuilding a guitar. Recommend some SC.

Post by metalguy »

Posted this in guitar but thought if get more eyes here:

I'll elaborate on the title a bit. The guitar in question is my first electric guitar my parents bought me, a Squier Strat. The one that really jump started my love for guitar :D Well I refinished it years ago put in a new pickup, then a few years later didn't like my DIY job I did . Well it has been sitting in a heap of parts for years ever since and I've finally decided to turn it into a true player. My plans for it are a refin, new bridge, new pickups/electronics and possibly new neck.

I think I've decided on a swirl job for the paint(been doing research on this, and will do some test runs). Gonna stay to its original setup and go 3 SCs 1 Vol 2 Tone.

But need some input on the pickups to put in them. Not sure where to start since I've been humbucker player for so long. So I come to GAB for guidance.

Recommend me 3 SC pickups. I want nice clean tone but can get a little nasty for some mid gain thickness as well. The neck though I want a smooth jazz/blues like tone. Think SRV-Little Wing.

Never been to particular when it comes to brand, though I'll say I'm more a Dimarzio fan then Duncan fan. But either brand will do or any other for that matter. But of course I do have to take the $$$ into consideration. Also not opposed to stacked SC either.

In the other thread I was suggested Texas Specials. Really liked them and may go with that in the neck and middle but not 100% yet. But definitely something else in the bridge. Kinda considering going HSS as well.

If you want a proper strat, I'd go SSS.

I have a set of Fralin real '54s in my Mexi Squier (yes, that's right, Mexi Squier) that are suuper vintage sounding will lots of chime, but I feel like you want something with a bit more grit.

I've really liked the guitars I've played with the Texas Specials myself.

Try Vintage Vibes. They're rather affordable for "boutique" pickups and the ones I've got (humbuckers, a HB sized P90 and a tele single coil) sound great. http://vintagevibeguitars.com/

Go to Youtube and type in Wilde L45 Ron Jeffries. That will show you the clean side. You'll have to take my word on how nasty they can get. Since they can get downright vicious.

Plus, they are only $45 each.

If you're willing to source them separately, I would highly recommend the Seymour Duncan SSL5 for the bridge position. It's got that aggressive bite you want and it's pretty cheap compared to the BKP/Fralin offerings.
Tele / Strat / LP / Sheraton
Into -> Pedals (too many)
Into Plexi clone / '68 Bassman / JCA 100 / '65 Ampeg M-15
Into 2x12 with Green Beret / Reaper 55hz OR 4x12 with G12T75s

Good deals with: Ovid9, paul88lx, Y0UNGBL00D, boonestunes, Laura from Valvequeen.

I like he Duncan ssl-1 and the alnico 2 and slightly prefer the alnico 2. Great cleans, not quite as good as the ssl-1 but handle od much better. Awesome pups.

I've read great things about Rose pickups, I have a set of Mariposas for a Strat I'm putting together, haven't tried them out yet though. Hard to beat at the price.

Really dug the SSL5 tones I heard from YouTube. Leader right now. Didn't really dig the Wilde 45 all that much.

Thought about P90's some, specifically the SD P rails but didn't seem like what I wanted.
