It's ridiculous how hard working metal bands are with very little payoff. Meanwhile some big wig is sitting in his hot tub doing nothing and collecting their money. Metal bands are some of the hardest working musicians in the industry and the most underpaid.

Doesn't sound right, Dave has always been the whiney guy in the band.
Sounds like they are getting tired of his shit again, he wants to bitch about his income while touring? Here ya go...you ain't gotta tour now stop bitching.
They should get Paul back.

That may be true. But, if I hadn't been paid for a year worth of touring, I'd be pissed too.
Re: From Slayer to $layer
Obviously we don't know what the real story is, but it certainly does sound like Dave got screwed over. Sad story when people let money turn them into douchebags, and they fuck their friends over.

I cared for about a second.
Then I stopped caring.
Just like Slayer should have stopped making albums around the late 80s.
Seriously though, sucks that it sounds like Dave is getting fucked. It seems odd to me that you've been in a band for most of 25 odd years yet you didn't have things set up prior to insure this sort of shenanigans was hard to pull off.

Never ever been a Slayer fan. Flotsam and Jetsam, Helloween and Anthrax were always my thing back in the early days...

Re: From Slayer to $layer
So the drummer thinks he's an accountant now?
FWIW, it sucks he's not getting paid enough, but it's clear he doesn't know what he's talking about.
1. Slayer isn't a public company.
2. He's probably technically a 1099 employee.
3. He probably signed a contract saying exactly what he gets paid.
4. You don't "deduct" "income".
5. He doesn't have access to the financial statements anyways.
6. It sucks he's not getting paid enough. He quits. End of story.
Move on. Nothing to see here.

Seriously, don't talk about finances and accounting in an interview, ESPECIALLY if you're a drummer.

This part is precious. It probably looked like Charlie Kelly's "Nightman" lyric sheet.
I normally don't do the smug LOL thing to someone saying something stupid, but this takes the cake. Finally, with my financial experience, I can feel smug and superior to a rockstar!!! Maybe, I should have gone into band management.

I've never been a big fan of any Slayer. I respect their place in metal history and enjoy some of the older stuff but it gets old to me super super fast.
But spot on about the drummer part.

Re: From Slayer to $layer
The more I think about this, the more funny it gets.
Assuming he meant what he said:
Example:
Below the line Income = let's say $10,000
Schedule C expense deductions(commissions, salaries, gas, bus tickets, hotels, food, phone bill, advertising, etc.) = $9,000
They made $1,000!!!!!!!!!
Let's throw a party! Very old metal band tours and actually makes money!!!!!!!! (More rare than you think)
BTW< Where is RSBro. I want to hear what he says about this. He's a CPA, I think. I should go into business with him.

This really sucks. I would bet that there's more to the story though. Kk just seems like the type who would just get tired of the bullshit and say fuck it your fired, even though Dave has a point. Still can't beat blasting south of heaven or seasons of the abyss albums while flying down the road at 100mph!

Bro, you rang bro??
Okay, AFAIK what usually happens is "the band" setups up an entity, whether it be a corporation or an LLC or whatever. Unless the record label just signs one artist of the band or something, it's that "company" that probably gets picked up, so whoever is on the "in's" of that is who controls the game. For example, I still wouldn't think to this day that Kirk is a "member" of Metallica, from a legal or ownership sense. It's always been James and Larzzz, so I bet Kirk and Robert are "1099" guys. J&L are the shareholders/members/whatever with a 50/50 split.
His misuse of accounting terminology aside, what he means is that yeah they made let's just say $1M and 900k of that was spent, leaving 100k to be split 4 ways. So, when he actually says it that way, it COULD mean he's part of the "company" and they all get a 25% fair shake. Or they allocate profits differently (probably), but that's beside the point- he's not happy there's not enough Net Income or Profit where he makes any $$.
What he means is that KK has a non-shite accountant, and is paying KK and Tom in Rents, Management Fees, Distributions, etc., effectively clearing out whatever profit they had leftover before it reaches Dave. Very smart tax planning that I'd recommend to anyone. However, it seems Dave has no accounting or knowledge of what's being pulled out, so he's PO'd and rightfully so if they won't TELL him where those 90% of expenses are being spent. However, if he's just a 1099 guy he has no say, so he should quit or STFU just like KK says. I doubt he's a full "1/4 share" member so he doesn't have any pull, he's just a hired gun effectively. Because you do have the right to inspect books and records at any time if you're an owner/stakeholder (generally speaking).
So yeah, he needs a new CPA lol. I could clear this up for him in about 15-20 mins, but he buys lunch.

Tell yer Momma I aksed her how she durrin...

Re: From Slayer to $layer
I don't see why some of you guys think that a band operating on a 10% margin is unusual. Remember that means for every $1 million gross revenue they make, they (the band members themselves) keep $100,000. Do you know how much it costs just to pay the venue? Also, venues typically charge around 25% commission on all merch sales. Beyond that, a professional touring band means paying salary to a large team of people to support the whole thing. It's extremely expensive, and specially these days. This isn't a small time cover band in some bar where they get to split 100%. The band members coming away with 10% is actually nothing to complain about. Sounds like the drummer got greedy and became a threat to the stability of the band's finances. I would have kicked him too.

An update from Slayer:
Slayer confirms that Jon Dette (Testament) will drum for the band on its Australian tour that starts this Saturday, February 23 in Brisbane. As regards Dave Lombardo’s Facebook post, Slayer does not agree with Mr. Lombardo’s substance or the timeline of the events, except to acknowledge that Mr. Lombardo came to the band less than a week before their scheduled departure for Australia to present an entirely new set of terms for his engagement that were contrary to those that had been previously agreed upon. The band was unable to reach an agreement on these new demands in the short amount of time available prior to leaving for Australia. There is more to the account than what Mr. Lombardo has offered, but out of respect to him, Slayer will not be commenting further. Slayer is grateful to its Australian fans for their understanding of this unfortunate last-minute change, and very much looks forward to seeing them at these shows.
