ITB bollocks.

Post by BroSlinger »

I get it. I understand you want a plain signal on tape so that you can process the shit out of it with free software.

That said, Every VST demo I see sounds like shit. fake, tinny, digital shit. The plug ins I'm currently using don't sound that great to my ears, but luckily, I try to mask it with lots of guitar.

Am I crazy?

I get the sounds I like with hardware. So, yeah, I'm committed to my fx because they are permanent. I don't care.

I was getting convinced for about 5 minutes I didn't need to buy any more hardware. Then ,I listened to some demos of these fabulous comps that people rave about. I hate everything about the way other people record. Dammit. Fake ass digital guitar + stupid, non-existent melodies + goofball cheesedick rhythms. Do you not have any feelings? Do you work in an elevator on speed? Dammit!

There's a guy who does pedal demos about which everyone gushes. He's a solid player, but damn do I hate his phony ass music with no feelings. Are you like Petrucci's stoner brother? Do you liek 70's prog or something? Did you grow up in the era of nothing existing? Am I just a fragile douche, and it transaltes to tape, and I like to hear myself?>

Blah blah blah ghghghg DERP DERP./ :horse: :horse: :horse:

That said, PammukParty's recordings fuckjing bring it. Damn. Nice.

ITB means "In the Box". It means recording the purest signal possible so you can add OR subtract effects later in the process.

I think the phony added effects sound like shit. (and it doesn't help that most people make shitty music with no feelings.) (I'm not talking about you guys, btw)

Honestly, mention you want outboard recording gear around guitarists and most of them lose their fucking minds because they're so obsessed with doing everything in the computer. Get around some real recording engineers and they get it. There's no real substitute for what certain hardware brings to a mix.

That said, I'm too broke for anything but ITB except for my guitar tones (cheap mapz, pedlulz) and cheap pre.

Broslinger you are an artist... and however you want to get that to tape is doing it right - in the box, massive refrigerator full of gear, whatever. I get pissed that engineering these days seems more like science/process/0s and 1s to some folks.

These Slate Digital VSTs are supposed to be really good. I have been tempted, but I have been buying plugins for Harrison Mixbus. I have found that there are some pretty good free VSTs, but the ones I have paid for sound better.

http://www.slatedigital.com/products/vmr

...I really like Mixbus for this scenario. It has an eq and compressor on each track that sound great. I haven't compared it to hardware gear, as I have limited funds (and too many wants). I just know that it is easy to mix, as the GUI is setup like a console. The only downside for me and Mixbus right now is that it is easy to overload the CPU. As of right now, it doesn't support 64 bit or multicore, so it can get bogged down with lots of plugins. That being said, I still love using it because of the sounds I get out of it. I would suggest you look into Mixbus :thu:

Outboard gear is cool and I'm sure it's much more inspiring to use, and I know outboard compressors have can handle big transients in a slightly more pleasing way, but I think there's VST stuff these days that sounds good enough that it's user error if things aren't sounding "right" (as opposed to just having slightly different color/character). Slate Digital stuff, some Waves stuff (the Neve, SSL, and API bundles, the Pultec EQs, the LA-2 and 1176 compressors), Bootsy (Variety of Sound)'s stuff, some of the Softube stuff all do the job great, and I hear praise for a lot of other stuff too (like everything Universal Audio, SSL Duende, The Glue, etc.).
