You can get MIM Fender P-basses all day long at Guitar Center's Used site for around $300. If you dont like what gets shipped, you have 30 days to return it to a brick and mortar GC. Can't beat that dealyo.

My price range isnt quite there. I am mainly a guitar player. Just geting a bass to stop clicking vst bass guitar notes when recording...
