Hanging out with dude for so many years was super inspiring watching him grow musically. Proud of the guy and happy for his success.

Here's his new video.

I honestly think he's one of the best guitarists in the world right now.

ed sheeran looks like a derp version of, well, me...but i heard one of his songs (the one for sons) last night and i thought it was GCJR
i liked his breakout album enough, but it didn't really DO anything for me. great playing, great singing, etc., just seemed like a lot of austin-polished stuff coming out of here lately.

I'm not sure if I would call him one of the best guitarists out there, but he is smooth as fuck. I've been watching him play since he was a kid. I remember when he and Tessemer used to play a lot together.

Gary has excellent fuzz tones and just really good taste in general. He's got that slow, smooth, sultry style to his playing.

I would love to see Gary rip it up with Anders Osborne.

That would be epic.

But i really appreciate his choices especially during solos. They go places that are unexpected and in a flash it can go from slow and smooth to screaming with some really unique phrasing. His improv skills when jamming are pretty stellar. I think that's why i consider him one of the best out there.... a lot of people can do the technical stuff but he can really make is sing.

I don't really like Larry Carlton. Robben Fords playing is another level from Carlton IMO. But Robben's music is way safe. Its his note choice that really keeps me listening. Its the same thing with Gary. I have never actually listened to one of his albums all the way through. But the man can play and sing his ass off. I'd love to hear a little more grit from him.

i don't get the "needs more grit thing". I think there's a ton of grit in his stuff for the style of music he plays and the fact he blends genres with such ease. Even that video i just posted... smooth song but that solo in the middle and at the end is all grit.

This is a great little set with the grit factor as well:

the only grit lacking in his live set:

Well Robben Ford and Larry Carlton played the show together. As we were leaving One World Theater Amy goes, "Robben Ford is way better than Larry Carlton."

Interestingly at no point did she get bored. She actually thought it was badass. They didn't play any smooth jazz bullshit. It was straight up blues rock with grooves and some jazz lines thrown in between blues licks for good measure. Robben Ford's Mom was in the crowd so he was just going to town.

His fuzz tones are epic.

Does he use a Analogman Fuzz of some sort?

And Gary Clarke Jr. is badass. Agree with the slow/sultry style comments - it's really awesome to hear someone play stuff that soars yet still grooves like a motherfucker.

and to get back to his smoothness... it doesn't get any smoother than this track.... then the grit comes in at 2:40 to sit perfectly over that track... again, solo phrasing choices here are impeccable.

Ya thats a bit more aggressive but fuzz tone does not = grit.

He's like Derek Trucks to me (who I would actually consider one of the best guitar players on the planet right now) in that they both seem like very introverted guitar players. Not a whole lot of emotion on the outside but you can tell they're internalizing everything.

The songwriting almost seems expected and not dangerous. Its not like I can do any better than them so this is not a criticism so much as it is an observation.
