Keep in mind that I love the blues but some of the things about SRV bug the hell out of me.
Maybe it's just me but I do NOT understand why so many guitarists worship this guy with some going so far as to spend thousands of dollars on reissue guitars and toob screamers.
His tone -- That strat > TS > Fender tone makes me want to puke. It's so gross and thin.
His guitar -- those SRV and 'custom' stickers are so low rent.
His stupid hats.
His vocals.
His songs.
Again, maybe it's just me, but there didn't seem to be anything really original about him. There must be a million and one guys on this planet that could smoke him in terms of playing and songwriting.

im in austin and hes a hero, but hes not MY hero. i have mixed feelings:
his clothes were legit stupid. but his tone DEFINES thick for me his vocals are texas-and-a-half. instant roadhouse. his half-bend business is annoying in the background if i'm doing something else, but i dig em when they are the object of my attention.

This.
I'd never describe his tone as thin. Axe: Go watch Live at the El Macambo and report back
His live extended-noodling shit was pretty awesome. Like Mike said, he's pretty much Jesus in Austin. For the most part I find him pretty boring, especially since you can walk down 6th Street any night and hear bar bands covering his shit, but his tone was awesome and he could play some mean guitar.

His tone -- That strat > TS > Fender tone makes me want to puke. It's so gross and thin. (A matter of taste really-Strats are NOT LP's)
His guitar -- those SRV and 'custom' stickers are so low rent.( A lot of players will do anything for attention)
His stupid hats.(See above)
His vocals. (Actually his vocals are his most original side)
His songs. (Its the blues not Mozart)
Again, maybe it's just me, but there didn't seem to be anything really original about him. There must be a million and one guys on this planet that could smoke him in terms of playing and songwriting. (Well he had chops BUT most of it was stolen stuff-sadly he could never live up to his hype)

Love SRV. Love his tone love his playing. The reason you can find a ton of guys that play like him is because of him. No one did it like him before him. He brought the blues back from death. Many guitar gods hold him in very high regard.
I mean there are tons of people that could play circles around Hendrix but no one did it like him.

I respect him, but I don't really dig most guitar virtuosos of any style. I can't say I've really listened to enough of his music to form any opinion outside of he was a pretty killer player and that its just not my style to listen to for more than a song or something.
Live would be different, but obviously that's not gonna happen now.

Yeah I really don't understand the 'thin tone' comment. It's cool if you don't dig it, but thin it is certainly not. It's about the thickest Strat tone in the world.
