I have issues with new Alice In Chains

Post by Anomaly »

Way too over-produced, Jerry harmonizes his vocals way too much, he needs to just let his voice be natural (like Boggy Depot) without polishing and overdubbing the hell out of it. Maybe give Duvall a little more singing time??

I think the latest Soundgarden album is way better effort than "Black Gives Way to Blue" or "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here". "King Animal" brings me right back to the mid 90's. It's nostalgia, but it's good nostalgia...

I love AIC which is why i need to post these thoughts cause i just can't listen to these overproduced of theirs, it just has no character.

I think the songs are just weak across the board from the new AiC. Can't get into it.

Same.
The songs are totally un-memorable. Production is great, but the songs lack the dynamics and character of their older stuff. Now it just sounds like creepy elevator music.

See I dug Black Gives Way to Blue quite a bit. Now Devil Put Dinosaurs here? It's a big pile of meh to me. And yeah I miss Layne also. Was listening to Mad Season not too long ago. Very cool hearing Layne outside of AIC. Great album too.

I can't really listen to it. I'm a huge AIC fan, shit, Cantrell got me interested in playing guitar. The thing is, the new stuff just lacks that rawness of the early stuff. Duvall can sing, I won't take that away from him, but I just cannot get into the new stuff like I can with Facelift or Dirt. Without Layne, I consider it to be an extension of Cantrell's solo career.

The vocals arent really the issue with the new AIC to me. The music itself is lacking. The riffs used to be more intricate and layered on the older stuff. The newer riffs seem a little basic to me.

is there a new aic track or is this regarding dinosaurs? I thought DPDH was a great disc and I personally love the direction they went in. Its very hard to move forward when you have had an absolutely LEGENDARY catalogue of music and try to move forward 15 years later. At some point you have to move forward and push new ideas in a certain direction. I didn't like Black gives way to blue at first I thought it was "soft" and the vox were way too harmonized and layered but now I actually expect that sound so its something that I can accept and enjoy. They are VERY professional live I saw them 4 years ago and they didn't miss a NOTE or ever get off pitch.

What old albums should I listen to as a total aic noob? That rooster song on the radio has always bored/annoyed me to all hell, so I know I must be missing out on something....

The first three. They are all killer.

Layne is my all time favorite singer. Jerry influences me more than I realize.

That album (Dirt) is my fave. Not a huge fan, yet I love them when I hear them. Jar of Flies one of the very few, rock-band-does-acoustic-album records that I totally loved.

Facelift, Dirt and Jar Of Flies.

Out of those three, i actually tend to only revisit Jar Of Flies every so often. I like them all but that's the only one i'll put on every now and again even though it's only an EP and all acoustic.

I actually listen to his other band, Mad Season, more than AIC cause i dig the bluesy feel mixed in to their sound.

Not aic but I really love Jerry Cantrell's Degradation Trip. I recommend the deluxe version as there are some extras songs and the song sequence is what Jerry wanted vs. what the record company did with the original version.

Yeah, its tough not having Layne, even though the new guy does great. But I do feel like their production is too slick & the vocal harmonies can get too heavy.

Yeah, i didn't even know they had sumthin new. I'm one of the ones who cant feel the same about them without Layne. Especially since i got into these guys right when We Die Young came out and got some exposure. Right around 7th grade,so it was quite influential to me.

And while facelift and dirt are for sure great, i can't believe "tripod"wasn't mentioned. I'll reach for this record more than the others at this point..

Possibly one of the heaviest dirges ever. Easily one of my favorite AIC songs.

Agree. Great track

Didnt realize Layne was already a stick figure by then. He already submitted to his addiction .

The self titled might have a few missteps (to me anyway... just a couple) but overall i think it has some of their most powerful stuff..

If memory serves me, Layne actually needed quite a bit of "Digital" help on that last album. You can see it on the Unplugged set. He was a mess at that point.

One of the most amazing voices ever. What a fucking waste.

Interesting.. Kinda surprised to hear that, but who knows. I have read that it was a difficult album for them to do cause Layne was very hard to work with at the time. I took the fact that Cantrell sang more on that record, as a pretty obvious sign. And Layne's voice is technically weaker , but like any good artist, you could really feel his struggle. Which makes it perhaps the most powerful. You can feel the dirt, the grime, the needles and all that in that last one.

I don't even have to be drunk to do the "do-doop". Lol. But i don't add the "p". Its just "do-du" haha

I dig Angry Chair. About 95% certain Layne wrote the music to that one..

It is such a heavy song without being "metal". They will play it on the radio from time to time and it always takes me by surprise as it is just droney and evil :rawk:

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was the point when Layne was showing up to the studio smacked out of his gord. The difference in his range and power from Dirt to Tripod is stark and sad. At his best, he was one of the most expressive and emotional vocalist ever. Along with having tons of just Raw Power.

No denying it here.
