help with mix?

The band recently recorded, and I wondered if you had any advice on this mix.

Dude! That is a totally awesome tune! The psychedelic side of my mind really dug it!!! :rawk:

Here are my two pence...

I'd bring the drums up just a bit. They also sound a tad muddy - a BBE Sonic Maximizer will really clean them up (I never record or mix without it).
The Sonix Maximizer gets rid of mud in a different way than an equalizer. Aphex makes a similar fx called the Aural Exciter.
After Maximizing (or Exciting) you may not need to raise the drum volume.

The keys are at the perfect volume at the end of the song but, they are difficult to hear during the rest of the sone... I think they contribute a good vibe to the song and I'd like to hear more of them, not all the time, but in maybe, two or three additional sections.

The vocals sound like they are perfectly compressed but, if you're also using an expander, you may want to kick that up a bit.
There were a few spots were the vocs were dropping out (IMHO) and an expander will fix that.

I like the vocal style (I'm a big fan of Stereo Lab). It's tough to pull off that style (especially dry) and I think the vox in your song are fantastic.
Because, it's a trippy song, I'd add a light flange to the last few words at the end of a sentence, here and there but, not on every sentence.

Love it! I'd buy the album!!!! :thu:

Maybe some slight parallel compression on the drums. I know you don't want to do too much for stylistic reasons.

Listening back... I don't like this mix very much.

My thoughts while I listen;

Left guitar before drums enter sounds slightly out of tune.

The flangey type guitar panned right is maybe slightly loud.

Kick's a bit weak, the rest of the kit sounds good. Some slight timing inconsistencies, nothing major.

The vocal sits slightly oddly, it sounds like it's been pasted onto the top of the mix. A breathy voice like that, I'd maybe compress reasonably heavily for intelligibility and sit it a bit lower in the mix. Also automate volume to keep it in place through the song. I'd also say that it might benefit from some slight reverb - doesn't need to be an obvious effect but as it stands it feels very dry.

The solo guitar trades with the 'fears' vocal, I'd maybe pan it centre as a result as it won't step on said vocal.

Snare maybe a little weak in certain louder pars of the song.

Am listening on my rather inaccurate headphones so I wouldn't feel confident being specific about frequencies etc. on the whole it's a cool mix and song! Great guitar solo too, wish I could play like that!

Did another mix the other day right after I posted. I will stick it up at some point.
