I made a big mistake

Post by Ostinato Rubato »

There's a guy at my work, sweet guy. Kinda Forrest Gumpy. Anyway, I burned him Satchurated: Live in Montreal because he has an interest in guitar music. Well, it lit him on fire  and he's like in a huge honeymoon phase with virtuoso instrumental guitar. His desk is close to mine and now it's all I hear. All, fucking, day, long....

Vai, Satriani, Timmons, Malmsteen, Petrucci, etc, etc, etc.....

All, fucking, day, long. Non-stop shredding...

Introduce him to Plankton and then you'll get to hear instrumental guitar music that doesn't blow goats. :cop:

:nope:

I'll listen to Plankton... but I don't appreciate the implication that Satriani blows goats... sir.

So, let me get this straight. You tried trolling this dude with impressive virtuosity and awful music and he ends up trolling you all day by liking it. LOL!!!

You got what you deserved. :P

Seriously though, get him some headphones.

Dude, Satriani's Satchurated: Live in Montreal is a super colossal album. It's seriously amazing and the best live recorded rock tone I've ever heard.

You guys are seriously making me mad.

I know I am in the minority, but I could listen to all of those guitarists almost every day, with the exception of Malmsteen of course!

Mike, maybe you could suggest that he can listen to Vai's stuff from Fire Garden up to now. At least some of the songs have vocals. Seriously, "All About Eve" and "Dying For Your Love" are great tunes.

Ditto. I respect their talent, as that shit's hard to do, but...

The toan is always razor thin, brittle, over processed, & 1985 sounding, IMHO.

It's because they're playing so many notes. They don't let any bloom.

for me, its not about the tone, or the number of notes. they can be used to an effect. a lot of the music i like on the weirder side does have technically tricky or "notey" parts, but it has to accomplish a goal.

i know you're sick of the reference, but take the beginning of the song Tetragrammaton by the mars volta. definitely 'shredding', by any means, but relatively brisk playing of a more obscure scale, certainly not "groovy" at all, more on the "notey" side, however it serves to create an atmosphere of chaos and building dread before it all drops out into a calm. beautiful.

There's plenty of truth to what the shred/virtuoso haters say. The majority of the genre is completely pointless and masturbatorily indulgent. But to me Satch is just fucking brilliant and I can't help being on the jock. And there's several of his tunes I skip when they come up on a library or CD but the vast majority of what he does to me is just . So the problem for me is this guy who sits close to me, sweet guy, puts on "Joe Satriani Radio" on Pandora and I have to hear every shred artist that ever lived and most of it is like, "alright dude... I'm tired of hearing fighting cats, crying widows, and those putties from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers".

Instrumental rock bores me to tears, I don't care how good the players are. Satch needs to get back with chickenfoot.

I'm sure he will and Chickenfoot's alright. But Hagar annoys me a bit. His voice is good, lyrics are just whack. Hard for me to jive with. I personally think Satch is best on his own. For real though, Live in Montreal is epic.

HUGE difference. I'll take razor thin guitar tones over bored breathy women covering Hall and Oates any day.
