I did no mixing on this fucker other than pulling the drums back a touch and then slamming a comp on the master. End result? Well, check it.

Sadly, the no mix method seems to sound better than the last bunch of multi-hour mixes I made.

Yeah, if you nail the recording you'll barely have to do anything in the mix (unless you want uber-clinical, hyperquantized bland modern perfection)!

The 8100 sounds good....I know Marshall have done some really nice solid state amps, but didn't think that included anything from the AVT series!
I'm about to grab a beasty little 5010 Master Lead combo, they're like 85% of a JCM800 for 5% of the price.

I love the 800, but can't do the volume required to get the tone I want out of it about 99.999% of the time.

Exactly my thinking. I had a 30th Anniversary combo for a while and even with all the low-volume-specific features, I thought it sounded like ass at home/jamming levels, and the weight drove me nuts for gigging. 1974x was lovely but needed pedals for my kind of drive.

Played my mate's Master Lead a while ago and was honestly bowled over, good dynamics and smooth drive. For £60 it's a whole lot of amp.

That's it right there - all the wierdness with the bess guitar is gone and it sounds nice and tight.

I really am impressed with the rhythm tone on that amp - it's got great grind in a mix!

Well, if my intuition is anything like it should be, trolling is heavily endorsed here, so go to it, man!

Also, as mentioned by Captain Biscuit, when you get the tones right up front, a faders-and-pan mix is about 85% of what the finished product is going to sound like, regardless.

If you have a bit of spare time, try digging a little of the mids out of the snare. It's a killer rock tone, but it sucks up a bit too much of the midrange for a metal track, since that's where the "beef" of the guitar is going to sit. I'm also not a huge fan of the gated 'verb you have on it, but that is VERY much a stylistic decision, so if it's the tone you want, by all means stick with it. Perhaps high-pass the return from (or the send to) the snare 'verb to keep the mids from getting congested?

Otherwise, you're 100% there. As much as I love having a ton of gain to cover up my epic level of suck on the guitar, metal rhythm sounds so much better to my ears with less gain. That sound like there's a 32nd note rest between each chord just makes it feel so much more percussive and real. It also makes it sound louder, since it's almost like that recovery time your ears have after a really loud peak.

Either way, sounds killer. Keep havin' fun, dude!

it sounds great to me. Thanks for the tonefinder link Love the tone, these amps are way cool. I hear what people are saying about the snare but it's no big deal IMHO. Still sounds great.

Sounds great now! I suspect the only remedy for the snare may be a sample change. It's a great rock snare sample, but I think metal demands a more "impulse-like" snare sound.

What are you using for a kit? If I had to guess, I'd say the Ultrabeat in Logic, which in screwing around making bad clips for me and no one else, doesn't have the best metal snares. Then again, neither did Drumkit from Hell Superior until the expansion packs.

Depending on what DAW you're using, you might try intentionally clipping a low-CPU utilization compressor, just to get that "snap." I've done that with the "Sliver Compressor" in Logic to good effect. Then if you can bring down the amount of gated 'verb on the snare, and maybe send a little snare to the overall kit 'verb? The gated 'verb will give you that initial snap, then the overall kit verb will smooth out the transition at the end?

Either way, it's awesome, and I'd love to hear the lyrical idea you had over the top. Definitely a band I'd check out if you were local!

Okay, I'm SO glad I waited until I got home and listened on the big(er) speakers. The snare seemed a little far back in the mix on earbuds, but the mid punch is right there in your chest on my monitors. I'm sure someone will say they want more snap, but I think for this style it's a perfect fit. There's an energy and vibrance to the whole thing that seems "live," instead of the overcompressed garbage we're getting from all corners lately.

I really like it. The guitars are still massive, grind-y, and awesome, the bass sounds great and doesn't stand out like it's in its own world, the kick sound is perfect, and everything else just fits and complements it really well.

I look forward to hearing the complete idea when you get the song put together. Definitely PM me when you put it up - I want to hear it!

Oh, and also MAJOR props for getting this site transferred to the new servers so quick. If you ever find yourself in the Northeast, bring a mix with you and I'll feed you beer and we can duff around with different mixing techniques.
