Partsocaster Project #3 is Done!!!

Post by Kage »

Just got this one finished up and it turned out really nice!!! It started life as a total cheap beater Fender HRR strat. I reliced it over time using the Whiskey method; Drink and then abuse the guitar with whatever was around which in this case was a heatgun and and a Kabar knife.

The neck is 22 fret maple scalloped, the pickups are all DiMarzio Areas; Heavy Blues II,67,61 from bridge to neck and the bridge is an old OFR.

Sounds and plays great and has been well recieved by anyone who's played or seen it.

Here is a family shot of all 3 partsocaster projects;

Ive really been enjoying these guitars but Im starting to realize that after playing scalloped boards for awhile, Im not sure that Ill ever feel entirely comfortable on them. They sound great and feel great but I find myself having to deal with a couple of issues that seem to be inherent to scalloped boards that can be annoying. The high E falling off the edge and certain chords where certain strings go sharp. You can overcome those issues by adjusting your technique a bit but it can be a hassle. I may swap out the necks for regular ones down the road but for now, Im going to live with them for awhile and see if it gets better for me...

Sweet, dude. First thing that popped in my head when I saw the sunburst with a Floyd and maple board was Maiden.

I love this method, I did the same thing to my strat

Anyway, nice guitar man, bet it sounds killer. I love the VV DiMarzios. :-bd

Nice! I've always wanted a strat with a maple board and reverse headstock.

It was just one of those things Billy, I decided to do it all under the influence, a little bit at a time just to see what would happen. I wasnt smashed, just a very nice buzz and had at it and Im pleased with the results. The best part about it was all these people coming up complimenting me on how much they loved the relic job and all I could think was " If they only knew..."

Damn Skippy on the Areas, They are hands down my fave pickups. The Relicd Black strat has the same set except for a ToneZone S in the bridge and its unbelievable sounding as well. The middle black has true singles handwound by this guy Mike McConachie and theyre the best true singles that Ive ever played...

Partscasters, FTW

I built the one in my AV just for shits & giggles. Intended on refinishing it & selling it, but I fell in love with it & it became a keeper

Wish I had some pics of others I built.

Ive got a 68/69 style reverse maple neck Im chomping at the bits to get started on. Im leaning towards a Carvel style body, if I can find one w vintage style trem route & single humbucker / single vol knob route. It'll be awhile but I'll get to it eventually.

Big Head Strats forever lol.

Amen brother, To me, there is nothing sexier than a reverse fathead ( or regular fathead for that matter)

Ill tell ya what, from here on out, any guitar I get will have an Area 61 in the neck and an Area 67 in the middle. That combo does everything that Ill ever need it to do..

These guitars are perfect but as I mentioned above, Im wondering if I need to replace the scalloped boards with regular ones on 1 or 2 of them...

Bro, the first thing that I did when my son was born was set aside all the college money that he'll ever need. Hes almost 7 now and by the time hes ready for college, therell be enough for 4 degrees from Harvard if he wants it...

BTW, All of these guitars were built from junk bodies, necks and hardware that I had lying around and had forgotten about for a couple of years. There isnt a guitar up there that cost more than 300 bucks, maybe 350... If you look around, you can find some ridiculously cheap parts and your biggest expense are the pickups and even then, you find them used on Ebay for next to nothing...

The whole impetus behind these guitars was to build nice players out of junk( good, cheap parts)...

yup. A man can snag up parts a little at a time & build it as he goes. $20 here & there..a decent neck...used body..raid the junk box. raid your buddys's junk box...

Not to mention great deals on "project" guitars in need of work. Great to fix up..or just to rob parts from..then sell / trade off the rest.

I been doing that shit for years.

Ive built $300.00 Partscasters that will curb stomp $3K Fender Custom Shop guitars

Spot on again Harley.. I have 1-2 guitars that Im interested in buying ( a custom GMW purple quilted Floyd V to match my GMW purple quilted floyd Paul and possibly a Suhr pro series C4) but from here on out, Im all about Parts guitars.

Everybody should play whatever they want to play but I crack up at the snobs and corksniffers that look down their noses at my cheap partsocasters. Theyre usually the ones that babble on and on about boutique this and boutique that until I plug one of my mutts in and after they hear the playing and the tone, they keep their guitars in their cases because they just got served.

A well built guitar will sound good no matter who made it.

Maybe one of these days, those of us who like to tinker should have a Partscaster Build Off ha ha. Would be fun, and would be great to see what we all come up with.
