Powered Boards Vs. Power Supplies, What's Good?

Post by TurboPablo »

I'm just about ready to set up a board. I don't run a lot of pedals so I won't anything big. What is a better option, a powered board with a built in supply? Or a power supply on it's own?

Or rather, what is less noisy?

I've been eyeballing the Furmann, SKB and Boss stuff.

I've been gigging one of these powered boards from Furman for years - I've even powered my halfstack off the bish on crowded stages and shit. No issues; rock solid. Got it used for $100

i prefer a power supply setup. PP2+ from voodoo labs is hard to beat (truly, i checked) but i also use a lot of boxes.
i think some of the powered boards are isolated. really depends on the pedals chosen and which type are on which tap, etc.

I use the Fame (DCT200?) which is pretty much a clone of the PP2+.

I'm happy with my PP2+. Its one of those things where you buy it and just don't worry about power any more. And with creative use of daisy chains and adapters, you'd be surprised how flexible it can be.

I only run a couple pedals off of power adapters. Everything else gets 9volt batterys. I just use a cheap power strip.

Does your Furman have 12 or 18 volt outputs?

It has three wall-type outlets you can plug any kind of adapter in to (as you can see) :p

Still using my Voodoo Lab PP1. Had it forever & it still works flawlessly and is quiet as a church mouse. Love it.

I have a Pedal Power ISO5, which is more than enough to power all my effects. It's extremely quiet too. A lot of pros swear by the VL products for good reason.

I've used the skb ps-45 for years and have been very pleased. The power supply in the furman pictured above looks extremely similar, but the skb has a hard shell case which is good protection for stuff in the band trailer.

I'd go PP. Either the ISO5 or 2+. If you go another route you'll most likely end up going PP later on anyway
