GnR at Golden Gods.....just plain awful

Post by DoubleBarrel »

I don't get it :idk:

For all the supposed "great players" in this band, I think they sound like shit. Axl just needs to hang it up & go back into obscurity. JMHO

What say you ?

Bumblefoot can play but his style does not fit with the old stuff. None of those dudes do really. Not even Axl anymore.

+1. Axl needs a couple of blues-based players instead of these shred guys...G n R was never about shredding.

As for Axl himself, he still sounds like he always did. Not good, but he was never a good live singer to begin with.

The main thing I have noticed about Axl's voice, well besides singing flat (even though he did that back in the day) is he doesn't have anywhere near the sustain/power. In that first vid he is actually singing way behind the beat. Getting old sucks, though somehow Dio managed to keep his power/sustain till the very end. Or at least made it seem that way.

Amen Brother

Compare this to GnR. Makes them the whole band sound like noobs.

RIP RJD

The Heaven and Hell recording does not seem to be entirely live... at the very least there is rhythm guitar under the solos

But still, RJD could eat Axl for breakfast at ANY point of their careers. Not really a fair comparison.

Considering that was filmed in 2009, when he was 67 years old, and about a year before he passed away from stomach cancer, Axl really has no excuse.

Here's one without the mystery rhythm guitar in there.

I could vouch for his voice still being in great shape live up to at least 2006. I unfortunately never got to see Heaven and Hell, but I did see him solo a number of times. And he was about as on point as a live singer could be.

All those GnR vids make me think is now that Axl's dropping a few pounds he looks more and more like the Russel Dunbar David Spade.

The theatrical version of the Big Four event had a big round-table discussion about RJD and their interactions with him. Apparently he had told them that his big warm up routine every night to keep himself sounding powerful was to smoke a joint, drink a beer, and try to chill before hitting the stage.

Dude had shit figured out. All these newbs with their clean living don't stand a chance.

just awful. I swear to you I thought this was one of those shreds videos, tats how bad his voice is. is that Ron Thal playing with him? that guy is awful, absolutely dreadful on the instrument. yeah im sure he can do some sick shit outside of the band concept but he cant play slash's songs for shit. This is just terrible stuff.

GnR has always been awful and always will be

And, how the hell does one even think about comparing RJD and axl rose? Dio's dog crapped better than axl ever sang.

imo, of course

idk Appetite for Destruction was a brilliant album imo and the one right after had some great moments too. Slash is one of the greatest players ever imo. There are very few who can touch the feel he has for the instrument.

Agreed.

And I brought up Dio as an example of someone who had gotten older but still had the range in their voice. I was not comparing their styles. :)

I was talking about Dio with my 2006 comment...trying to refute the implication that the "not entirely live" part may have involved Dio re-recording vocals in the studio.

I saw them at Rock on the Range and yeah I left with mixed feelings. Some songs they seriously nailed, and others were just awful. I remember seeing the GG's show and going :freak: and why they were so different. They really do have too many people onstage though.
Plus, the show was like 3.5 gat damm hours long, from what we heard. I could only stand so much and then left after they did "Patience". Every person in the band (INCLUDING Tommy Simmons (I think?), the bass player) got a solo set. It was a little ridiculous but whatevs.
My favorite songs Axl actually a pretty good job on, though some may have been backing tracked fo sho'.
