Hevy Devy fans - Did Juular end up on the wrong album?

Post by nightflameauto »

I'm catching up, slowly, on my Devin Townsend schtuff and just grabbed Deconstruct and have been listening to it a bit. What kills me is, there's some awesome moments on that album, but nothing that you'd truly call catchy other than Juular. That song, by the time he hits the second repitition of the chorus I found myself singing along even the first time through. And the whole rhythm just grabs you right off the bat.

Anybody else feel like that one belonged on Addicted? Seems like almost that entire album is catchy and groovy.

Awesome video for evidence:

I could see it being on addicted, but idk if it quite fits stylistically

I apologize in advance for the next Davy album you'll be listening to

Nah, Juular definitely sounds best with all the orchestral stuff going on on Deconstruction. And it's a little too dark to fit on Addicted.

And I'd say Planet of the Apes definitely has some catchy sections, as does Stand. The title track a bit too.

Yeah I honestly agree with the above too, deconstruction took a few listens for me to really start getting into it, but i love it now

Epicloud on the other hand is still pretty much unlistenable to me other than Kingdom 2.0, which is fucking amazing

I don't know enough about his albums to answer this, but this song was unlistenable to me. He does have some good stuff, but this sounds like being weird for weirdness's sake. DNW.

I guess some part of me always wondered what it would sound like if you tried to turn circus music into a metal tune and this one just struck that chord for me immediately. That and the chorus with the huge orchestral + choir build just makes me wanna jump.

As for next "album." Ghost is disappoint.

Devy can pull out some amazing tunes, and some really :freak: and you really never know what the hell you're gonna get. And you really can't judge based on what anybody else thinks either. I've got a bud in the UK that we pretty much agree on all music, always, and we can't agree on a single Devy album.

This is actually one of my least favorite things he's done. But I'm not too big on Vai.

I fucking love Devy.
I don't know what if I agree or disagree if it'd be better on a different album or not.
His albums are always so sort of all over the place anyway I just kind of take em all at face value.
Juular is probably my favorite song of his, for that same reason. Catchy circusy sounding metal. Its pretty Dan Eflman in a Tim Burton movie sounding and I love it.
I mostly like Devin because in the terribly cliched genre of metal he's a fucking breath of fresh air.
Isn't worried about following trends or being cool or having the most fans possible. He's just doing what he wants to do, writing what he wants to write, and being what seems like a genuine somewhat weird dude.

Some songs I absolutely think are genius, sometimes I think they're fail, but thats the cost of creativity.

For me when it comes to Devy, Sycnhestra and Terria are pretty much impossible to top

I'm a massive Devy/SYL fanboy, but I think that Addicted was really the last good album he's done....and even it pales in comparison to the older material

I dig Juular. I do not, admittedly, listen to full albums all at once from him (post SYL, at least) as his material is so all over the place. No singular favorites allowed:

Also, Devin with Vai has always struck me as :freak: yet  The songs I have listened to are really odd and unenjoyable, Vai's absurd musical skill obviously aside.

Pretty much, although I do really like Deconstructed and Ghost. Epicloud was just a massive disappointment to me though

I really dig Casualties. It's a very chill album for sure but it's something cool to put on after a long day at work and just unwind. And I love Che Aimee but I loved her on Ki too.

I try to approach his albums as their own self contained thing so I'm not constantly comparing back and forth. The exception is his SYL stuff which I love. But out of the DTP stuff he's done Ki is probably my favorite. A lot of the songs have a build up and crescendo of tension and right when they hit that point they let go a little... And reel it back in. Addicted is fun, I like Deconstruction but some of the songs can get a little too drawn out, Ghost is background music for me napping and Epicloud was ok. Not his best but it had some enjoyable tracks. Out of his older stuff I really like Accelerated Evolution and Ocean Machine.
